what should i get SSD PCIe 3 or 4 for my motherboard Z270 MSI

Hello everyone. 

i want to upgrade my ssd to Samsung 980 PRO 1TB PCIe 4.0 

and my motherboard is MSI Z270 M5 Gaming

i don't know if my motherboard Support PCIe 4.0 or not .

so Should i get 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 or 970 PRO PCIe 3.0

Unfortunately, Z270 motherboards only support PCIe 3.0, so if you got a 4.0 SSD, it would operate at 3.0

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

If you think you'll upgrade the rest of the rig soonish, get the 980 Pro. It'll run at 3.0 speeds now, when you upgrade to a modern platform you'll get 4.0 and thus the full speed out of the drive. Otherwise get the 970 Pro, assuming it's cheaper.

the PCIe is backwards compatible, so you can use PCIe 4.0 SSD, it will just operate on PCIe 3.0 speeds

 

The 970 pro is a Fast PCIe 3.0 MLC SSD. 
The sustained performance are that of the best SSDs, because of MLC NAND

 

the 980 pro, or any other good PCIe 4.0 ssd on E18 + 176l TLC micron (firecuda 530, KC3000 etc. ) are fast TLC drive with fast burst pSLC buffer speeds that even on PCIe 3.0 should increase performance singnifty ( but only with specific use cases ).

Yeah, the two drives will have the same bandwidth. Though their performance won't be identical because the 980 is newer. 

 

Is this SSD for gaming purposes mostly, or do you have more demanding uses? If you're only using it for a gaming PC, a less expensive option is recommended, and I don't think you should prioritize PCIe 4.0
