Hi everyone.

This year is the year I want to upgrade my electronics, mainly the phones.

What I am using currently: Samsung Galaxy S8(personal) and iphone 12 mini (work phone).

I want to make some upgrades as the iphone is not mine and the S8 is kind of almost dead.

I am trying to figure out a good road to go to

1. Go with Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (when it releases) and get myself a samsung smartwatch

2. Go with iphone 14 pro max and get myself an apple smartwatch

Number 1 will never happen if S23 series will still have Exynos in Europe.

As for the budget, I am aware that apple is more expensive but money should not be a problem, both options are expensive.

What I am looking for

- Reliable phone / smartwatch (ecosystem entry)

- Long term usage (longer that 1-2 years)

What are your opinions?

I think it depends on which ecosystem supports you the best. If you have used both IOS and android which do you prefer?

IOS does have a track record for longer software supports by a long shot though.

Apples closed wall garden understandably bothers some people and can sometimes be a dealbreaker.

I've been running an Iphone 13 pro for the last 2 years and have had no complaints as well as an apple watch SE2.

(I have used android in the past and just prefer IOS)

Its all down to your preferences

I'd say it comes down to your choice of smartwatch.

The Apple Watch really is the best smartwatch on the market; I'm not even being hyperbolic. It gets the most aggressive hardware and software updates and the most robust ecosystem. There are also lots of nice touches, like the more pleasing haptics (a text message feels like a gentle tap on the wrist, not a buzz). It doesn't integrate as well with third-party services (though you can use Spotify fairly well with it), but I've had Apple Watches since 2015 and haven't regretted it.

The Galaxy Watch 5 is a solid smartwatch, to be clear, and you might want the Galaxy S23 Ultra if you're mainly interested in a familiar phone platform. The rumors suggest you might finally get a Snapdragon chip in Europe, so you might get your wish... I wouldn't pin all your hopes on that, though.

Both have healthy lifespans. Apple has the edge on software support with five years of OS updates (plus a little more for minor fixes/security), while Samsung offers four years for the OS and five for security.

As a solid android boy, I always say it comes down to what you have an what you want. Apple has amazing longevity and, despite the trashy way they treat their customers, make solid products. If you are willing to make the mondo investment, it's a very convenient ecosystem to live in. If you just want it to by and large work and don't want to do anything fancy pants, and you have the scratch on hand, Apple is the way to go, especially with their watch, tablet, and airpods pro. But if you like to tinker and tweak, most of their stuff basically gives you a giant middle finger. Additionally, if you don't want to support their wildly anti consumer practices, you can find reasonably priced alternatives to everything

I got a Google pixel watch it’s pretty good it can do everything a Apple Watch and a Fitbit can do and it doesn’t matter what device you use it with it just needs the Google pixel watch app and the Fitbit app that’s it I have it paired to a Google pixel 7 phone and the performance is pretty good too just what I need and it’s camera is pretty good as well but I don’t care about the camera or storage as long as it’s above 64gb’s

i used to have a Google pixel 3 xl not too long ago and it was pretty good as well it’s battery was a bit old and not as it used to be but it was still pretty good it got the job done and the pixel 3’s got canceled not to long ago for updates but still are active and running at factory speeds I had it for 5 years I got it when it came out by average the Google pixels stop with the updates after 5 years or so

To start: punctuation is your friend. Please use it! It makes things easier to read.

I wouldn't say a Pixel Watch can do "everything." For one thing, you need a Fitbit Premium subscription to unlock many of the general fitness features on the Pixel Watch; you only need Fitness+ on an Apple Watch if you want video classes or Time to Walk/Run audio workouts. Also: you need an Android phone to use a Pixel Watch (you do with the Galaxy Watch 5 as well), so it's not the wristwear I'd pick if I thought I might switch platforms.

The Pixel 7 is an outstanding phone; I have a Pixel 6 "sidearm" phone I enjoy using, and the 7 is better than that. But I wouldn't say the Pixel Watch is a reason to go with an Android phone, at least not right now.

I have everything unlocked on my watch and I don’t even have a Fitbit subscription and I have had it paired to a iOS device before like completely paired and setup with an iOS device using the app and I do agree with you about it’s not the wristwear I’d pick if you switched platform.

and sorry for my punctuation I’m in a hurry rn and please do not point it out again.

Well, long term = Apple (typically), unless you will miss something about android watch/phone.

However, a couple of people I know who wanted a smartwatch were expecting too much of them and were disappointed (too much hype in healthy lifestyle ad lines I guess).

Edit: You said long term as in 1-2y+... that's a short term.

I'm still using an older model of the samsung s series, and I can still use Spotify and download podcasts, update Firefox and firefox with the about:config (fennec on f-droid) and use that to set font scaling larger than 200%.  For some reason, things are smaller on my tablet vs a smartphone, so I make it larger.

I can run audio equalizers, both on spotify and separate programs.

I can play any games, even emulated N64 games and some gamecube games, just as performant as my pc at full speed.  What more could you want from a mobile computer?

Also I have a headphone port, most new phones don't have that.  Also it can be used for FM reception.

You don't have a true need for a new phone, wait until your phone no longer works, that may take a couple more years at least, but it's better for the environment.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

released in 2008 and still being improved.

Dark Reader addon for webpages.  Pick any color you want for both background and text (background and foreground page elements).  Enable the preview mode on desktop for Firefox and Chrome addon, by clicking the dark reader addon settings, Choose dev tools amd click preview mode.

NoScript or EFF's privacy badger addons can block many scripts and websites that would load and track you, possibly halving page load time!

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.
