Ok guys,

I have a pretty old intel i7 4790k, 16Gb DDR3 Ram and a Asus Maximus VII Impact Z97 that decided to spit the dummy a few days ago.

The problem is, after powering on, the system just keeps power cycling every couple of seconds. You'd hear the PSU click on, the fans would spin for a couple of seconds, then off, then click, then fans, then off.... rinse and repeat!

Thankfully, one of my office PCs is a 4th gen intel system so after swapping everything out I can confirm the CPU, Ram, PSU and GPU all work when plugged into my office system's mobo.

So, is my Asus mobo for the bin or as anyone seen this before and managed to bring it back to life.

There are no post codes or led indicators for cpu, ram or other issues.

Any ideas?

Cheers

If you haven't already I'd say it's most likely the PSU and not the board, can you try a different PSU in your computer with all of your OG parts including the motherboard?

That would have been the first thing I would have tried, it's a lot more likely for the PSU to fail over the motherboard.

If the PSU doesn't fix it and it is the motherboard I'd say your better off getting a whole new platform like something off of the AM4 platform or a 12th or 13th Gen Intel build. No point in putting money into something as old as 4th Gen these days.

Thanks for the reply,

That was one of my first attempts. 3 different PSUs all confirmed as working perfectly and they still power cycle indefinably.

Yeh,

At this stage I even decided to try and boot without any cooler and to be honest it didn't make a difference.

The system doesn't even get to a POST stage.

Socket pins all look good and I can't see any broken traces or any other visual defects.

I'm totally cool with this being ready for the bin but when it comes to PC stuff, I'll fight to the bitter end to keep stuff running!

Have you done a visual inspection? Take all heatsinks n shit off and see if you see anything crispy? Mounting pressure can result in issues like you described, hence why I recommended.
