Merry Christmas to all.

I am willing to build my 1st NAS.

It will mainly used for photos, and personal files. I saw that using special softwares or something you can have thumbnail etc through your mobile.

The idea is to stop using Google photos.

I have bought jonsbo n1 but I am looking also for another case (minimal).

Jonsbo N1 looks nice, and in case that the airflow isn't enough I might proceed with some modifications since I am very familiar with sheet metal constructions.

I cant figure out which mobo which cpu and which ram I should use.

ECC or DDR5?

Looking for good reliable solution but with low power consumption.

So please give.me.a help if you can.

Thank you.

ECC stands for error correcting checking

.... Or something like this.

ECC is an additional features installed on some RAM.

DDR5 RAM can be ECC.

DDR5 RAM can be not ECC.

Generally speaking, computers that aren't turned off for a long time or computers that need to never fail/crash are equipped with ECC. As far as I'm aware, CPU and motherboard that support ECC ram are more expensive than those that do not support ECC ram.

Unless you're running a business that is extremely dependent on your Nas to be reliable 24/7 or you will lose money, you don't really *need* ECC ram. Your personal photos and stuff won't be corrupted because your ram isn't ECC.

It's definitely good to have. Supposedly your system can potentially possibly start having issues after being turned on for 3 days minimum... Some people leave their systems on forever (exaggeration) and have no problems.

If I'm reading your post correctly, you're buying a Nas computer that needs RAM because it doesn't come with it.

If this is the case and they recommend a certain RAM, I would just buy the recommended one.

If you're planning on building a system, I wouldn't worry about getting ECC.

What is the budget for the entire system, and how much storage space you need?

You don't need ECC or a DDR5 system. DDR5 will be extra expense for no benefit.

Have you considered prebuil

Have you considered Pre-Built? Synology DSM gives you exactly what you want

It's also very low power.

you say 2 of the 8tb drives for now. you can and cant upgrade later. if you upgrade later on something like TrueNAS you'd have to add a new pool and it would be separate. its best to build it to max storage and hope to never need to upgrade and that way you can do something like raid z2 and have 2 failure drives while still having a boatload of storage

You dont need ECC, it's a nice to have. Either way you'll have a backup that should account for the lack of ECC.

Asrock sells these mini itx boards that have onboard low end processors and coolers. this ones a quad core pentium j5040 model that has 2 ddr4 sodimm slots, a passive heatsink, an m.2 slot(E-KEYED FOR WIFI MODULE, NOT STORAGE!), 4 sata ports and a pcie 2.0x1. all for $152, enough for a basic nas and maybe a small plex server, the cpu and cooler are already taken care of. And its extremely low power consumption being based around a mobile chip with a 10 watt tdp  https://www.amazon.com/J5040-ITX-Quad-Core-Processor-Mini-ITX-Motherboard/dp/B08M9VVSB9/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2RTWNXEQHXTGE&keywords=asrock+itx+combo&qid=1674678883&sprefix=asrock+itx+combo%2Caps%2C149&sr=8-5

As far as an os goes, openmediavault is super lightweight, free, and is based on debian. It has the ability to use LVM for raid ( i dont know how well it works), as well as ZFS with a plugin (again, have not tried this, im using an SMR drive) It has a kvm plugin so could run vm's on it, you can easily install docker and portainer to manage it, as well as file browser, a web based file browser that lets you access your files through a web interface, can be done over the internet using tailscale.
