Hey guys, so i just finished building my first gaming rig, and i don't know what the hell is going on, i finished plugging everything in and went ahead and turned it on, and it turns on perfectly for like 2 seconds and then it shoots right off! What am i supposed to do? i have gone through the manual like 3 times and i have no clue what to do anymore...

Specs:

Intel Core i5 3470

GA-z77m-d3h gigabyte motherboard

8gb of kingston ddr3 ram

700w cooler master Power supply (its kind of an overkill atm)

320 gb western digital blue hard drive

Cooler master elite 430 case

The power supply might be the issue. It could be shorting out as well. Is the motherboard on the standoffs?

So im guessing if you turn it on again, it will just shut down again, check your 24 pin connector, and check all the other connectors that there plugged in correct, just go look again and make sure the cables are in, unplug and do it again if you have too

I'm gonna take out the mother board from the case, maybe theres a short-circuit with the chasis or something

since your taking everything out, maybe you should test your power supply, disconnect every cable, and turn the power supply off a the back, get a paper clip, go to the 24 pin connector and find the green wire, put it in there and then the other end of the paper clip, go to a black wire, then turn the power supply on at the back and see if it turns on, if it turns on and stays on then you know the power supply is ok, unless it fails under load, here is a video

double check your 4/8 pin is plugged in properly, this will explain why it turns on for 2secs and then shuts down.

this is a very common mistake and happens to everyone

only other thing i can think of is yuo did not put the cpu heatsink on correctly and is overheating and shutting down to prevent damage but this usually takes more than 2 seconds. i would take the motherboard out and set it up on top of the anti static bag it came in and try booting it from there with only one stick of ram in it.

You did not just say that. You did not just say that! The coating on the outside of an anti static bag is conductive. That's how it discharges static from your hands before you touch the component inside.

omg you didn't just say, if that was the case why do people sit the motherboard on the bag when installing processors and ram before putting it in the case it is fine as long as it is on top of something non conductive. if what your saying is true that means the outside of the bag stores static electricity which could jump to the motherboard when taking it out of the bag. :P

Just one thing that might help if anything. Did you check if your PSU is set to 220V or 120V? a friend of mine had no idea what that was for and didn't even bother to check it out and left it on 220V and couldn't for the life of him know why it wasn't booting. lucky for him, it wasn't the other way around or else he would've fried his system.

The outside of an anti-static bag IS conductive. bradscoolio was correct, and just because they do something, doesn't mean it's right.

So people, NEVER lay hardware on an anti-static bag.
