Welcome to the forums!!!

Which generation of processors are you looking for on an LGA1151 motherboard?? There's 6th/7th gen on LGA1151v1 and 8th/9th gen on LGA1151v2.

So I already have a 6th Gen processor

Ok, getting slightly long in the tooth on 6th gen. Have you possibly considered upgrading to a newer platform instead of budgeting $400 CAD to a replacement motherboard? What happened to the previous motherboard?

eBay Canada do have Z170 boards roughly $200 CAD shipped from China that include MSI and ASUS boards that you could look at if it's an unlocked processor to overclock (gotta have that -K chip).

So yeah I am looking at potentially upgrading to LGA1200 10th gen cpu and Z490 motherboard.  My previous motherboard was a Z170 and if I could find a cheap replacement and not have to upgrade that would be great. I just didn't want to make any purchases without being sure I had gone with the most cost effective solution.

An i3 12100 and B660 board are likely cheaper, and noticeably faster, I'd look at that combo instead.

Oh, then 12600KF. It's cheaper than the 10700KF going off PCPP's CAD pricing. Should be as fast/faster, with the option to upgrade to 13th gen once those hit the used market, and just a more current platform overall.

It's faster than what you have now. Even if you have the fastest 6th gen (6700k) the i3 12100 doubles it in r23 multi thread and about 40% faster in single thread.

It will be hard to find brand-new motherboards for 6th Gen Intel.

Because production has already been long discontinued.

Why would you got with 10th Gen?

You will encounter the SAME issue as you are now with your current setup.

10th Gen is already being discontinued in favor of 12th Gen.

Funny enough the 6700k is the cpu I have. But good to know thank you.

The reason I'm looking at 10th gen instead of 12th gen is I'm still running a 2070 super. I'm trying to prevent bottlenecking as much as possible.

Actually I just looked into it and it seems the i5-12400 is a good match with my gpu

With your 6th Gen setup, the bottleneck is your old CPU.

The GPU was probably never running a peak potential.

A new CPU + RAM would relieve the CPU bottleneck, but the RTX 2070 Super may be the bottleneck now.

But I don't think you quite understand how "bottlenecking" works....

Your 6th Gen CPU can only pump out max 70 FPS.

Your RTX 2070 Super can pump out max 175 FPS.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your performance "bottlenecked" is 70 FPS because of your CPU

New i5-12400 GPU can do max 200 FPS.

Your RTX 2070 Super can pump out max 175 FPS.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Your performance "bottleneck" is now 175 FPS because of your GPU.

Yup, the i5-12400 is a solid GPU.

Just curious, how much more is the i5-12600?
