Basically Im a beginner in PC building and have built a few PCs for some side money and some for my friends and I've uselly been able to fix my fuck ups but yesterday I was building a PC for a friend of mine

I used my case, motherboard, (hp am4 unnamed) GPU, (1660) and psu(unnamed hp) from a pavilion prebuilt I had collecting dust he also bought a Ryzen 5 5500, Samsung 1tb SSD and 16 gb of ram I forgot the manufacturer. but that all was fine the problem comes next

so the CPU didn't work I figured it was the motherboard being what I assume is zen 2, and the bios not supporting the CPU. So I looked for a way to flash back the mobo but found nothing.

(Btw I originally forgot to say this, but I put the windows installation on a flash drive like normal on his PC) so I replaced his CPU with mine from my PC a, Ryzen 5 3600 and it booted right up and weirdly never asked him for windows or to put in a key and no water mark it just worked for some reason so we left it there and I just payed him the difference in price

So i went back to my place and put his CPU in mine hoping it would just work and It didn't so I flashed the bios on my msi b550-A pro and then it read the cpu and started to boot up

then it blue screened completely and would never go to even the lock screen and and on start up took me to a blue page for trouble shooting and when I tried resetting my PC and said it failed to reset.

It looked like to me that windows was corrupted or gone but I have no clue and then It said Toshiba hardware trouble shoot or something like that and the only Toshiba part I have is a hard drive so I thought the hard drive was the problem so I took it out and nope still the Toshiba thing so I plug the drive back in and it said reset and hard delete all data form all drives

I did and now after that this morning I went to check on my PC and it asked me to restart it and said it finished deleting all data and partitions.

then it went into bios and it did not detect any boot drive or any windows (btw the drive I was using as a boot drive and had my windows on it was the old m.2 drive form the old pavilion prebuilt I used to build my friends PC)

It's all over now and imma have to buy a new copy of windows but I still don't get why it happened I thought maybe switching the cpu's did it, but as I was told in the comments it shouldn't be so I'm thinking it was the motherboard update (fixed it like I said I would not perfect but I'm also trying doing this quick on my break)

Windows keys aren't tied to CPUs.

He bought a Samsung 1TB SSD that just happened to have Windows on it already?  Obviously he bought a used one then?

First, you should have reinstalled Windows on his machine as a clean install and gone thru the proper processes.

Second, you are obviously not telling us something.  Swapping CPUs does not do what you mention.  I've dropped in a 9900K onto my z370 board to replace my 8700K and NOTHING changed.

What else did you do?  Did you mess up the BIOS flash?

Are you booting off the Toshiba or the old Pavilions M.2?  Are you saying the BIOS update caused the Toshiba to fail?  Or the BIOS update screwed up the M.2 ports, since you're saying the pavilions drive was your boot?

Just reinstall Windows to your machine and see what happens.

I can't follow what you wrote. Paragraphs are a thing.

A little rude but I get your trying to help so thanks and sorry for my lack of Grammer, and my point is idk either as I said on the end my guess was something to do with the cpu. maybe updating my mobo bios messed something up I honestly have no clue.

Thats why I made the post. Also his SSD was new again why I don't get why it didn't ask him for a key and didn't pop up a watermark unless windows has a trial period I haven't heard of. All i know is I swapped cpu's and my PC wouldn't turn on so I updated my bios, then my PC turned on but kept crashing on start up. I'll correct my post when I have sometime during work.

Oh yeah I almost forgot to mention ofcurse I had to use a USB drive with the windows installation as a boot drive on his SSD but it didn't make me put a windows key in and when we got into the PC it didn't have a watermark like I said I forgot to say that i used a USB drive

Since op doesn't seem to have an enter key i can't really read the wall of text (sorry not sorry) what has "changed" ? Did they update the BIOS?  some newer BIOS are incompatible with older cpus, i wonder if that's what's going on?

honestly i don't have an issue with bad grammar, but if you look at what you wrote do you really think its easy to read?

Enter key is a thing... use it... it doesn’t even have to make sense,  its just to make it easier to read for everybody.

so idk what happened my.guess is it gave him my windows key and explains why he didn't have to pay but is that even possible the only thing we swtiched out were the cpus?

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Its indeed still unclear what happened,  and why windows was suddenly installed on a new drive, and what this has to do with anything... so basically are you sure you didn't switch hard drives?

either way a cpu switch shouldn't corrupt a hard drive,  but it can happen i guess .

I'm betting he put the Pavilion drive back in it, and put the new drive in his.  This would explain why Windows just worked on his friends machine and why it was gone on his.
