12400 slower than 8700

Looking at the benchmarks above, it seems the 8700 non k is faster than the 12400. 

Is this true? 

I thought that 4 year newer i5 would be faster than old i7.

base frequency does not really tell you much of anything

IPC and benchmarks will give you a better idea of the performance differences.

Just some friendly advice: don't take sites like these seriously. Simply counting cores, threads and gigahertzes(?) and calling it a day isn't a benchmark. It's not a useful comparison at all. You'll want to look for sites that actually list test execution time or test scores. So real-world performance. Something like this. Although they don't have a 12400, you can already easily make out that even the 12300 beats or at least comes near the 8700. Not bad for half the power usage!

Or you'll start claiming that a 200 hp Civic Si can't beat a 400hp Ford F-150.  Specs are barely half the story.   Those sites are data, not analysis.
