I wouldn't call Civ V a RTS, besides I always enjoy a but of supreme commander every now and then with mates. Cheap to pick up on steam and is on sale quite a lot.

Wargame series is good for a more authentic/realistic strategy. Air Land Battle is my favourite but red dragon is out now and  apparently it is better, I haven't played it yet though.

forgot Civ V wasn't an RTS but I suspected someone would say to try that! And I saw the war game series and it looked interesting is it a single player thing or is it a fun experience if you play against some friends and are things like bases/forts implemented?

War game is a very different RTS because it relies solely on unit combat. You can fortify units in houses but that is about it for fortifications. It is all about unit numbers, positioning and overall battle strategy. There is a steep learning curve but well worth it in the end. Games can be slow and drawn out and playing with friends is good fun but nothing compares to the game's 10 v 10 mode which is madness over a massive scale.

If you like RTS it is worth a try.

EDIT: There are single player and multi player modes. Single player is fun from what I have done so far.

The timeless Empire Earth still beats out most RTS games I've played.

Which one?

Can also vouch for Empire Earth. Amazing game.

I'm guessing you like the first one the best? whats the difference between this one the second and third?

The second and third added a lot of useless stuff, and removed pretty much everything good from the original, which is an exceptionally fun game.

relies solely on unit combat? Oh so like the entire total war series? (In battles not campaign map)

Supreme Commander 2 is really fun, although everyone say Supreme Commander Forged Alliance is better (older one I have yet to play through). Also check out Warzone 2100, my all time favourite RTS game even if its from 1999 plus its free and they still update it now and then.
