Recommendations for a home server?

Hey everybody!

Im trying to get into making my own home server, but im really not sure which parts i should choose.
I have been thinking about getting a Intel® Core™ i5 10600K, as cpu, but im not sure and have no idea which motherboard, etc to use with it

 

The primarly use for the server would be running a modded minecraft, and other game servers mostly minecraft.

 

If u want any more info to help or something hmu, im open for talking

My go-to recommendation for stuff like this is a Xeon v3 or v4 based workstation, like the HP Z440 or Dell Precision 5810. Something with the LGA2011-3 socket. You won't get modern single-threaded performance, but the hardware is attainable and you can pack the thing with loads of (relatively) cheap registered ECC DDR4 RAM.

So u wouldnt recommend getting a Intel® Core™ i5 10600K?

I was thinking about
ASRock B560M Pro4 - Motherboard
Noctua chromax NH-D15S - CPU Cooler
Intel® Core™ i5 10600K - CPU
for the server, any thoughs?

For what you want to do with it, no.

 

Then again I'm a cheapskate and I like to tinker. You can get an entire Z440 with CPU, RAM, and a small SSD for just the price that processor alone is selling for now.

 

A semi-recent office desktop would work too if you want something physically smaller and quieter.

 

If you're sure you want to buy current parts, I'd go AM4 over 10th gen.

What currents AM4 would u recommend especially for handling modded minecraft, and other game servers?
same price range as the i5-10600k?

Like i looked at these for options it would atleast make the price a bit cheaper, but i really dont care about the price like i can always wait a month or 2 extra for some more cash.

im able to host a FTB revelation server with just a single E5-2637v2, and did that for like 140 dollars for everything. I even host other services on that machine, but not too much because of the lower core count of the 2637 (4c8t). using a K series processor for dedicated game servers isint a bad idea, but it depends on how much money you have to throw around. most likely you can get away fine with using older, cheaper server hardware with lots of optimization (world pregeneration, optimization mods/plugins, ect), and while also being able to use virtualization to take advantage of higher core counts to learn and explore other IT technologies. it always depends on how much money you have to play with, but i always suggest spending more for something good and reliable so that you have fewer headaches. 13th generation dell servers are getting cheaper on ebay, and a recycler near me gets them regularly and will sell them to me for next to nothing ($80 for chassis and ram).

Well these stuff are more favorable to 10600K IMO, especially for Minecraft. The only issue is, the cooler NH-D15 would have been a total overkill... Better for picking up another around $20.

Sooo, the default coolor thats with the cpu would be fine?

Yes. The stock coolers are more then enough for a NAS/homelab unless you intend on having a workload that will have the system slammed at 100% all the time and want it to be silent. Most servers will not be sitting above 10% much at all.

Like for the start im probably only gonna have
a modded mc server, and a vanilla
2 csgo and a satisfactory server.

Thats probably what i need at the beginning, when i make it.
