internet speed limited to 100mbps

I have a 250mbps internet connection. i recently ran cat 6 from the router to my computer room. cable goes into a gigabit switch that then has a cat 6 cable to my computer. problem is my computer is still only getting 100mbps. windows is saying its a 100/100 connection. However if i unlug the cable from the computer and plug it into my laptop it gets 250mbps. i know my computer has gigabit ethernet but it just doesnt seem to be working. Anyone got any ideas that i could try.

 

I have tried restarts, changing the cable, switching ports on my switch and computer.

yes and i have just updated them and it didnt change anything

That Intel is a 1Gbps card.

cable is good it gives 250mbps when plugged into my laptop.

 

dont know why the IP is odd looks normal to me. what is odd about it?

 

if i plug the cable into the 2.5 i still get limited to 100mbps

Assuming you crimped the cable yourself, did you use the A or the B standard?

 

I might have not worded it correctly. Usually the first range people use starts with 192.168.1.1. since most ISP equipment starts with that.

If you're advanced enough to configure your own DHCP, doing subnetworking and stuff, I find it strange that you can't diagnose this.

the cable to my switch was crimped by my dad i dont know how he did it but the cable to my computer is one supplied by Virgin

Is there a chance your dad did the network management and purposely limited the speed to your computer (mac address and ip)?

unlikely but i suppose it could be possible though i dont think he would even know how to do that. Is there a way i could test it?

Other devices connected to the same cable, check the connection speed (not the Internet speed since, for example, a laptop might be connected to wireless).

Da a sfc /scannow on your PC.

 

Then do a scan with IOBit Driver Booster.

 

Then do those:

no it shows 1Gbps on the laptop but 100mbps on the pc

Have you tried using the other NIC on your PC? The 2.5Gbit Realtek one?

yes i get 100mbps no matter what port i plug into

Wait, the pc and the laptop connected by the same cable, one to another, and one shows 1Gbps the other 100 Mbps?

if i plug the cable into my PC then it says 100mbps. If i take that same cable and unplug it from my PC and plug it into my laptop it says 1Gbps on the laptop.

And now we know the issue is your PC.

 

Do you have any software that could affect the ethernet, like some Internet optimization tools (cFos, NetLimiter, ...)?

 

Were there any power outages recently, thunderstorms etc?
