Budget (including currency): ca. 1500€

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:  Civ 6, Dark Souls 1-3 (plus Eldenring sometime in the future), Valheim, Chivalry, Medieval Dynasty, Baldur's Gate 3 (once it's farther done) (plus other stuff that basically runs on a potato)

Other details:  I've already bought the case, because I liked it, it got good reviews and it was a little bit on sale. Monitors also need to be bought new, but aren't part of this budget. Mice, keyboards, etc aren't either.

OS: Windows 10 (I don't want 11 yet), I have a student license

I'm having trouble making up my mind regarding the graphics card - is the 170€ difference worth the difference in power/ability? (with the 2. it's a bit below 1500€ and with the 1. a bit above)

Are there any improvements to be made?

If you do have any suggestions, I'd love it if you could explain your reasoning, I'm not just aiming for a good computer, I enjoy understanding the why as well - but I totally get if time's short and someone just throws out "replace X with Y", I appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

P.S.: I'm also wondering if I should wait with buying stuff until the new graphics cards launch/black Friday. Any thoughts?

This will blow the socks off your build.

This list is surprisingly decent. I like your choice in storage, case, memory, and even GPU.

That cpu is silly for a new build though dog.

You really want a 13600k or if intel is expensive where you live a Ryzen 7700x

Thank you! I've spend a lot of time watching LTT and GamersNexus, etc.

The 7800X is 9€ more expensive than a 7700X, I figured in that case I should pick the better one.

Which graphics card would you pick? That's the one I'm having trouble with. it's a 170€ price difference.

As in more than 3200? That's what the CPU says it supports max, so I aimed for that/no higher, no lower.

Tomorrow! Then I'm definitely not ordering that part yet.

You mean the 5800x over the 5700x? You shouldn't get either of those for a fresh build. That is Zen 3 on AM4 (Dead End Platform)

I am talking about the 7700x (Zen 4, AM5, brand new socket)

I would imagine that is the max speed that it supports without "overclocking." Enabling XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD) would get you up to the speeds that the ram advertises.

Thank you! I had all that be quiet! stuff in there, because, well, I want the system as quiet as reasonably possible😅 advertising got to me, I suppose.

Now here a possibly dumb question: I vaguely remember that the really new stuff requires Windows 11? Can I run Windows 10 on this without any fiddling? I don't want to switch operating systems, which is why I opted for the previous gen CPU. I can't find the source for where I picked this up, so now I'm wondering if it was nonsense/a misunderstanding.

Windows 10 doesn't do as great of job with The 13600kf's E cores, but you can still run it no problem and it will still be wau faster than a 5800x even on Windows 10

If I look up the motherboard, it says that it's for the 12th gen, there's apparently a bios update for 13th gen, but wouldn't that require another CPU, that works right away, on hand? I can't find anything about this being able to do bios updates without a CPU installed.

Fan speed is the most important thing for a quiet system. That BeQuiet cooler is kind of crap and underpowered for the 13600kf. The Deepcool one I linked will likely be much quieter. Or you could always go for the Dark Rock Pro 4, which is quite good, but more expensive

That is my mistake. That motherboard does not have Bios flashback and you would need a 12th gen chip to flash the Bios.

I would get the MSI Z690A DDR4 board for around ~$50 more. That board is the cheapest board with bios flashback I believe

Thank you very much for the effort and time you're taking(making? sry, not my native language) here.

That puts me 183€ over budget (The case cost 103€, I just realized that I never put that in🙈), I'll have to think on this/figure out if there's some wiggle room or if I could save somewhere else (maybe the lower graphics card after all? RX6700XT is 170€ cheaper, that covers the difference...)

Don't go over budget. Just get a 6700xt, it's a really good gpu

Alright 🙂

So the final version is this https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/2dY3v3

One last question: It says that the cooler may require a separately available mounting adapter - where would I get that from? (Or is there an option that doesn't require finding adapters?)

Also, I'd like to mark your reply with the build as a solution - but with the motherboard that does the BIOS flashback, do you want to repost the build so I can mark it as answered?

I just edited my post if you want to mark as solution. And I believe that CPU cooler will most likely come with an LGA 1700 bracket, so you don't have to worry about it .

For any gaming focused PC there is one simple rule:

Buy the most expensive GPU you can and build the remaining system around that.

OK, maybe a little too simplistic, obviously don't spend 1k on a GPU and 500 on the rest,... but if you can, actually do that. 😉

No, really. The GPU will be the one component you REALLY notice. The other stuff is nice to have and better parts will be better, yadda, yadda. But in reality you won't notice the difference between two ram kits that vary in price by a factor of 2x. But you will notice the difference of going just one tier higher for a GPU.

Exaggerations aside:

Get the better GPU. Think hard about getting an even better one and if you really can't find the few bucks extra to get it. You. Will. Notice it.

The rest of the system is pretty fine. Id go with a 5800x3d tho, as it currently is one (if not the) best gaming CPU for that budget.

So, assuming you can't magically conjure more money than ca. 1500€, which tradeoffs would you make in this https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/2dY3v3  to get the more expensive GPU?

(Also, if I put the 13600KF vs the 7 5800x3d into google, the benchmarks it spits out all favor the intel CPU and the intel CPU is cheaper where I am as well. Why do you think the 7 5800x3d is better? Or did I get my numbers mixed up again? That already happened once in this thread😅)

Possible. I only looked at about 5 reviews and they all showed the 5800x3d winning in most cases vs the current gen AMD chips.
Intel is pretty good with their gaming performance in their 13th gen, but I did not think they were THAT cheap to get.

About the conjuring more money:

I honestly don't think anyone could get 1500 bucks and not get 1600 by waiting another month. 😉

I would not change anything in that part list to be honest. Not downwards at least. I would double the memory and get a better GPU and deal with the little waiting time it would take to get that money.

Since you mentioned a Student License and are from Germany:
I made 950 bucks / month by being a tutor in LMU Munich. And another 600 bucks by waiting tables 4 days a month.

We are talking a couple weeks TOPS to increase that budget, if you want to. And it would really pay off. That list is great. It really is. Just add a few bucks to upgrade the GPU and memory and you are golden. Hell, you could order a few parts on a "pay over 12 months" plan and not have to do extra jobs on a weekend at all.

However, I can't stress it enough: A better GPU is worth A LOT more than it costs at that price point. 200 bucks extra get you a MUCH better gaming experience.

If you really can't make that work for some reason, your current List is fine. But you will regret not conjuring up that extra money. 😉
