Computer will power but not post

Go to solution Solved by solado,

You will need to update the bios as that Motherboard has been sat in a warehouse for months probably.

To update it you need a CPU that works with the original bios 1000 or 2000 series, take it to a PC repair shop and ask them to update it (they will charge a fee) or return it for a more modern board.

Was upgrading my computer been waiting a little bit for a motherboard to come in it all just got here today so I started working on it got it all put together hit the power button all the fans spin up the light on the graphics card comes on but it does not post I went through some troubleshooting things such as reseating the ram reseating the processor reseating the graphics card the power cords the SATA cables I swapped over to the stock cooler from a cooler Master Master liquid lite 240 water cooler hoping that it might have been mounting pressure problems I tried booting with only one ram stick I tried booting it without the graphics card and having it plugged into the onboard graphics I'm at wit's end

Did you update BIOS on your motherboard?

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Bios on that motherboard probably isn't compatable with a 5600g out of the box. Might need to be updated.

Basically what these guys say, you will probably need a first gen ryzen chip to update the BIOS

If someone has helped you out on the forum don't forget to give them a reaction to say thank you!

No I haven't updated the BIOS I don't actually even know how to also I assumed that it was supposed to be compatible when it said this revision on their website was compatible with it cuz I thought to update the BIOS you would need at least a process that I would work in that motherboard which I do not have otherwise I wouldn't have had to get a new motherboard my old FX processor from 2011

I'll probably have to go with the more modern board because I just checked from where I live it's a two and a half hour drive to the nearest repair shop I live in the middle of the nowhere in the Midwest of the United States so I would appreciate any reasonably priced suggestions also thank you for your help I was afraid that might have been the cause

If you quote people they will see that you replied to them. We don't automatically follow threads like most other sites just because we replied. The quote button is in the bottom left of a post.

That being said, you mentioned FX processor. Which one? If it's Bristol Ridge, don't use that. You'll lose compatibility in the middle of the BIOS update and get stuck.

Got any friends with a Ryzen 1000, 2000 or 3000 series they'd let you borrow for a few minutes to update since you have no repair shops near by?

Thank you for that information about quoting someone also I can tell you exactly the processor after I get it put back together and about a friend most of my friends I had back when I was in high school about 8 years back now have moved away but I'll see if any of them are coming back into town soon and then I haven't really made any other friends that aren't online only because of mental health reasons and if you were thinking I was going to try to use my old processor to update that board it's an a.m. three processor so it won't even fit in that board or else I didn't think so

AM3 will not work in AM4. There is another option with some patience. AMD does do short term loan boot kits. They do specify that it's a 5xx series chipset that needs updated, but they might loan for a 3xx series chipset.

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-105

Quote

Short-Term Processor Loan Boot Kit

AMD will offer affected and qualified users (as described below) a compatible CPU (“boot kit”), including thermal solution, for short-term use to perform the BIOS update on their motherboard.

This short-term processor loan or boot kit is offered through AMD warranty services and is available only for qualified users that:

  1. Have made a valid purchase of an AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Processor and,
  2. Are unable to boot that processor because the user’s current X570/B550/A520 BIOS must be upgraded first.

This service is free of charge with the following condition:

Once you have submitted your claim for a processor loan boot kit, AMD will require pictures of your AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Desktop Processor and AMD Socket AM4 500 Series motherboard, which clearly shows the model numbers and unique serial numbers as well as a copy of the purchase invoice(s) to authorize the request. Also required is a summary or copy of the communication with the motherboard manufacturer indicating why support from the Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) is not suitable.

Once the RMA request is approved, the boot kit will be sent with pre-paid return shipping. The processor is provided as a temporary loan to you for the sole purpose of updating the BIOS and must be returned within 10 business days of receipt. It is not necessary to return the provided thermal solution.

To obtain the boot kit, please carefully follow these instructions:

  1. Go to the AMD online warranty claims page: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/warranty-information/rma-form
  2. Fill in your full contact and product details (AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Processor OPN number and serial number)
  3. In the Problem Description field enter "Boot kit Required" (without quotes)

NOTE: The product must be a valid AMD processor with authentic OPN and serial number.

Once the claim is received and approved, confirmation details and boot kit instructions will be provided in a follow up email.

Worth asking about.

If they won't, there are boards you can get that will support flashing BIOS without a compatible CPU. I'm trying to find cheap ones. Ones that would cost less than your board and a cheap R3 from eBay. However, I'm finding them for about $45-50 shipped on eBay, and no boards with bios flash back really in that price range. Facebook marketplace might be an option. Make a post asking to borrow one for a few dollars for a few minutes or something.

You probably should, but before you do just double and triple check all your power cables and display cable. Especially if you moved the computer to make room for the new one.

For a little bit of backstory my computer is in my living room, so I thought hey maybe I should just tried into my TV in there plugged it in oh it works perfectly fine so it is my monitor or cable or possibly the DVI port on the card so I've got some testing before I can come to a full conclusion but in the meantime I'll just have to steal one of the lesser monitors till I can replace it that one I was using has been on its last legs for a few years now and again thank you so much for your help you made a bad situation bearable

Feel free to ask for a hand figuring both out. Depending on what AMD says to you, I might be able to work something out for a CPU. I need an AM4 chip anyways for repairing AMD boards. That's something we'd figure out in DMs though. I don't want people thinking that's something I'll always do or anything like that.

I've found a small shop in the town near where I live so I'll be getting it worked on tomorrow I just hope he knows what he's doing because he thinks you need a case to update the BIOS on a motherboard

It's a little bit on the shady side, but if he borks it and it's not recoverable, you could always return the board. Say you don't have an older AMD cpu to update BIOS with and have no shops near enough to update the BIOS. They should approve that return.
