Is it worth upgrading to a 3090 from a 1080?

Absolutely it will be a massive upgrade ... like massive however that will depend on your resolution i would minimally play at least 2560x1440 to really enjoy the benefit of that upgrade. I upgraded from 1080 To 3090 and the upgrade was massive can confirm.

I was hoping to upgrade to a 4080 but after the launch, I am not going to do that. 

 

I still want to upgrade and I am looking at a 3090 as I should be good with my 850W PSU and on paper it is much better than my 1080, 

 

I have looked up benchmarks for the two main games my PC struggles with (MSFS and RDR2) and it looks good but it is a lot of money.

 

Based on personal experience, how much of a real improvement will I see?

Mother Board: MSI z690 carbon WiFi

RAM: TeamSport Elite DDR5 2x16 4800mhz

OS: Windows 11 Home

Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU 27" 1440p @ 165hz

Keyboard: Razer Black Widow Chroma

Mouse: Logitech G502

Sound: Sony MDR 1000x Headphones, Blue Snowball Microphone

 

Laptop Specs:

Gigabyte Aorus 15G

CPU: Intel i7 10875H

RAM: 16gb DDR4

Storage: 512gb NVMe, 1TB Crucial MX300 SATA SSD

Why not wait until AMD reveals RDNA3 and see how the prices on 4000 series adjust. You don't have much to lose and it's not far away.

Im at 1440p so that is exactly what I wanted to hear. That being said, I may wait like Zet said.

Yeah odds are I will also be transitioning over to AMD with the loss of EVGA as a partner to NVIDIA. I absolutely loved the 6900 XT Xtreme it outperformed 3090 in basically all games I played without RT in factor.

Had a 1080ti, upgraded to a 3090. kept the same 850psu but ordered a 1k. Cod beta, I could hear it wine.
Doubled the frames even with an old cpu and even buying a larger res monitor. 
No reason for me to wait given what I paid and hoping to get ahold of some new fancy green card and wait months for a water block.

Wait a little bit longer and prices should come down a bit more. The performance increase as others have already said will be huge.
