{Urgent} PSU Fan Issues

Go to solution Solved by MG2R,

That sounds exactly like the sound of a brushless DC motor not getting fed a rotational speed at the right speed. (The speed at which the BDCM controller on the fan alternates the active phases of the stator is too fast for the rotor to follow in its acceleration, thus it stops )

If you can RMA, do that, otherwise, change out the fan.

The way you know it's an electronics problem is because the rattling continues after the fan blades stop spinning.

So after re-orienting the direction my PSU faces today, my PSU's fan started to have issues. Whenever I put any kind of load on it, it starts to make some pretty horrible noises. Here is a video of what happens:

What do you think the issue is? I'm pretty sure I need to RMA my PSU, but maybe it's an easy fix. My PSU is a NZXT Hale 82 V2 700watt.

While idling and watching youtube videos, it's fine. When gaming, the noise starts to happen. Sometimes when gaming it can take up to 10 minutes before it starts to happen, or it can take a minute. It's kind of random.

I'm taking a blind guess that its something stuck in there. Possibly an extreme amount of dust clumps or dirt?

The PSU is only about 8 months old and it's always been on my desk. I doubt there is a ton of dust in there. I don't really see any either.

I don't know how something would be stuck in there

that looks about ready for RMA unless you can take the grill off and fiddle with the fan without voiding warranty. Turn it upside down and see if it makes any noise.

by the way, that cable management is grounds for expulsion from the cult

My desks cable management or my case's?

yeah, but like others have said take it out, flip it around and shake, smack, shank it etc. and it might stop.

don't love it too hard though, or they might deny RMA.

Unscrew the power supply and give it a shake DoubleWeeWee. Also looks like it could be a fan issue, but I didn't want to jump the gun because something else could be causing the fan to stop.

What could have gotten in there when I was flipping it around though?

Anything that can fit in the grill? Can you temporarily flip it back with the fan facing down and see it it still does it? Maybe gravity of the fan blade is causing it.

Then I would have to re-do my cable management. The CPU 8 pin isn't long enough if the PSU fan is facing down. But I GUESS I could try it
