I'm planning to upgrade my gpu and noticed that I have a caveman power supply which uses molex, and the gpu i am planning to buy has 8 pin 6+2 connector, for piece of mind, I should buy a dual molex to 8pin right? just plug those 2-4 pins to the power supply then attach the 8 pin on the gpu right?

Psu model, unit, wattage?

Photos of the psu model and the psu wattage table would be helpful here just in case your psu is not as bad as it sounds

Molex to 6 pin doesnt seem to work for me but im adapting molex -> sata -> 8 pin, also tried the molex -> sata on an hdd and the hdd just didnt work and made odd noises (no the hdd is fine it just made odd noises), so would avoid molex adapters at all costs, but if you have some free sata power laying around then you can adapt that to 6/8 pin, it does actually work for powering a gts 250 which for some idiotic reason needs 2 6 pin when a single 8 pin would be fine

Depends on the GPU... A lower-power one such as a GTX750 or GTX1650 (those that use 6+2, I'm aware some don't) might be okay with a SATA-to-PCIe 6+2 adapter cable. But I wouldn't try that for an RTX20x0 / 30x0 / 40x0 card. I certainly wouldn't fool with a Molex adapter, they're notorious for melting under traditionally known uses (aka they suck).

Unless you're looking to set your pc on fire, get a new PSU.

You convinced me Jeff, you just gave me the best speech ever. Thanks everyone! Gonna upgrade the psu now too, never trusted it anyways since the beginning. GIGABYTE P650B(the upgrade psu) is fine for a 3060 ti right?

Tell your PSU to suck it, we're doing a bottle episode!

That PSU is fine in wattage, you may want to go up a tier if you're planning on taking it with you to a future build. EVGA has a 650W 80+ Gold PSU (EVGA GQ 650W) that is also semi-modular for about the same pricepoint that I can find that Gigabyte PSU for, so it all depends on what you're willing to spend (and what that Gigabyte is advertised for where you live).

Gigabyte also has a P650G PSU, also quite cheap, which is also an 80+ Gold rated PSU.

Bronze rated PSUs should be fine, but I've grown suspicious of Gigabyte PSUs after seeing one catch fire during Gamers Nexus' tests, and the response from Gigabyte was less than stellar. That's why I'd go for either EVGA, Cooler Master or BeQuiet, but that's just personal preference and experience. I've also had good experiences with Corsair PSUs, but your mileage may vary, as some of their more recent PSUs seem to have stability and whining issues.

You can say that again, one of mine has actually melted and the other not melted one that looks to be physically intact is non functional cause even when i plug the sata cables from the molex adapter onto an hdd it just makes weird noises whivh i assume is just it powering on and off repeatedly

But my sata to 8 pin adapters work completely fine, just these molex adapters really really suck balls
