I have Shentel for my internet provider with a 10 mb/s hi speed package (https://www.shentel.com/campbell-county/shop/bundles/double play hd/10mbpsuhd). After 5 months of service I recieved a letter saying that if I did not reduce my data usage that they would cut my service, on the letter they showed 3 months where my usage was 300-500gb a month. There was nothing in the contract saying there was a data cap and now I recieved another letter 2 weeks later saying they were cutting off my internet despite cutting back the best we could (we have 5 people who game, work from home, stream heavily). Is there anything I can do to figth this? They are the only decent internet provider in my area and we can't go back to DSL!

Tell them to go fuck themselves and then take them to court (after you get a lawyer to search the terms of their contract for a data limit) then if there is one argue on the case it was never publicly presented or acknowledged to the individuals you're providing the service for. You can try getting signatures or others who have the same service to vouch for this fact. If you luck out with a forward thinking judge and can afford it the ISP will be slammed and forced to let you stay. You've got a 50% chance of this working probably, if you can afford it.

Well shit, I figured it was gonna come to court if hashing it out with customer service doesn't work. It sucks cause we have to wait until the main account holder gets back in the country to make a move on them, hopefully a court threat will scare them like most companies.

I just noticed they have a freaking F rating with the BBB, that sucks.

In my experience, when getting shafted by corporate entities, it is

usually required to be utterly relentless if you want to not just bend

over and take it, and even then, your chances of success are often

not that good. Take apart every piece of legal mumbo-jumbo involved

in the relationship, every letter you have from them regarding this

matter, find any weak links in their chain of arguments, make sure

you check out consumer protection laws (if there are any), and so on.

And yes, eventually going to court might be a possibility.

It's usually a lot of work and rather exhausting TBH, but in those

cases where I've seen success, that was what needed to be done.

But as said, it's no guarantee. If you don't get anywhere with customer

support, it can help to find out email addresses of the higher-ups

and email them directly (with a polite, but determined letter). @looney

recently had success by employing that tactic with Lenovo.

I've just discovered that our local ISPs also have a data usage limit.  Depending on which grade of service customer's subscribe to, that cap is between 100 - 400 GB per month.

This cap is not stated anywhere when signing up with their service.  But it is stated elsewhere on their website, which is what they point to when someone goes over the limit.

My sister has recently cut the cord with cable TV service, using only streaming when watching movies or TV shows.  But within the first month she went over the 250GB usage limit. DOH!  Her ISP won't charge her for going over, but they say she has to keep the usage under 250GB.  If she goes over excessively they will suspend her service until she reduces her usage.

Other ISPs will charge per GB for any overage, so my sister is kindof lucky in that respect.  She doesn't have to pay for the overage.  COMCAST on the other hand has a limit of 300GB, but they DO charge for any overage.

I don't think you will have much choice, either reduce usage or buy a 2nd modem and setup two network... doubling the 250GB limit to 500GB per month.  Divide the family usage between the two modems (subscriptions).  Obviously that will double your internet bill.

I don't think you can fight it, but I don't want to discourage you too much against that option.  it just seems like a losing battle.

Comcast has a 250GB limit, but the limit is suspended.

So you can go over, and it won't really matter.

Been suspended for a long time.

They only use the cap in a few places.
