RTX 3070 high mem controller usage at idle

jm_bmw

Hi everyone,

I just noticed this, wondering if its normal or something is running in the background...

At idle, fans stopped, all clocks, temps and pciex speed down, my gpu memory controller usage stays at 50-70%, w 600-700MB memory usage.

Using W11 21H2, 4K 120Hz resolution, nvidia dr v.516.94

If I were to guess, that's how much VRAM it takes to output 4k/120hz.

Pixels take up VRAM too.

So 4k makes GPU go brrrrr even without doing anything?

Can't speak to his memory utilization, that I can't explain by the resolution. But the RAM utilization, could be due to the high res/refresh. My comment was more about the VRAM usage at idle.

EDIT: I booted up my system, seems like around 600mb of VRAM usage is being taken up by default. or around 5.9% of my 10gb. Seems like that is normal. My memory controller utilization however is at 0%. Something is def funky.

Are you sure nothing else is running?

displaying anything on screen requires the GPU to do some work.

Taxing the 3d cuda cores?  No, no it's not, but it's still doing work to output display.

17.8 watts of power draw definitely isn’t “brrrr”, it’s basically not doing anything.

Seems normal enough to me. I wouldn’t worry about it unless you experience an actual issue.

Sorry if my question wasn`t clear enough, vram utilization is definitelly fine I guess its defaut for 4K. What I am concerned about is the mem controller load!

Everything is down at idle, clocks, power, temps etc, just mem controller being loaded... very weird.

Would be interesting if someone w a similar setup could check too 🙂

Are you on 4K 120Hz too? yeah I think something is going on... I even unplugged from network thinking it was a mining virus or such, same behavior offline...

Have you tried using another tool to monitor? Say don't use GPU-Z and try hwinfo64? See if it reports the same.

Yes, I actually found it on HWinfo64 and confirmed with GPU-Z...

I will reinstall the drivers and see how it behaves.

Reinstalled drivers using DDU in safe mode, same issue :(

Hello
The same problem now. Found a solution or a reason?

Hi, I noticed it too a few days ago.
The strange thing is, the more monitors I connect (via cable) or activate (via Win + p), the lower the gpu memory controller load is (windows desktop idle).
I would expect exactly the opposite here.

one monitor (no matter which one) or tv ~40%

two monitors ~9%

two monitors + tv ~3%

It is independent of whether they are connected via HDMI or DisplayPort (port 1, 2 or 3).

@jm_bmw What we both have is Win11 21H2 and a RTX 30n0 graphic card. Are you currently use Win11 22H2 or still 21H2 ?

RTX 3060 12GB (12G-P5-3657-KR)

GeForce 537.13 (custom -> perform a clean installation) or 545.37 (DDU -> Windows Update)
Monitor 1 = Dell UltraSharp U2515H (DP -> MiniDP) / 2560 x 1440 60Hz

Monitor 2 = Samsung SyncMaster 204BM (DP -> DVI) / 1600 x 1200 60Hz

TV = Samsung The Frame 4.0 GQ43LS03T (HDMI -> HDMI) / 3840 x 2160 60Hz

Windows 11 21H2 RP Build 22000.2416 and 2479
GPU-Z 2.54.0 and 2.55.0 or HWiNFO 7.62 showing the same results
DDU 18.0.6.7 or NVIDIA uninstaller via control panel
