Sony 43" X85K Vs Nvidia Control Panel - Crunchy Image @120hz

Go to solution Solved by tikker,

The X85J seems to have an issue regarding how 4k 120 Hz is handled. Apparently vertical resolutoin is cut in half and interpolated in that mode.

Since RTINGs says the X85K is basically identical to the X85J maybe it's the same issue you are seeing.

Hi there!

So I've searched the forum but I didn't see anything that was exactly the issue I'm having (possible I missed it). Let's get into it:

THE ISSUE

I have the TV listed in the title that I'm using as my one and only monitor. The picture and Image are AMAZING when using the "Ultra HD, HD, SD" category in NVIDIA Control Panel (NCP). However, the refresh rate only goes up to 60hz in this section. Scrolling down to the "PC" Section I can select the native resolution (3840x2160) and 120hz (which is the refresh rate of the panel). The problem is that when I select 4k 120hz under PC the text and image quality is VERY crunchy and .. not impossible to read but.. not easy to read either.

WHAT I'VE TRIED

The TV has several options for different input setting like "enhanced format" and "VRR". I've tried several different settings and picture modes through the TV and combined those different settings with different settings on my computer as well. Like: HDR, 10bpc, 12bpc, RGB, YCbCr444/422/420, High Performance Mode in power settings - Ultimate Power Mode as well.

I've used DDU and did a clean install of drivers and even tried the "make text clearer" in a desperate attempt.

I've tried custom resolutions and timings.

SYSTEM SPECS

OS:

Windows 11 Pro (64bit) - Also Activated (looking at you Linus 🤨)

PC:

CPU - Intel i9 - 10900k

GPU - Invidia RTX 3090 FE

MOBO - MSI Z590 Gaming Edge Wifi  (Unsure of BIOS)

PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 100W G5 Gold

RAM - G.SKILL Trident Z Royal RBG DDR4 3600MHz (64G)

CONNECTION:

Rocketfish 8k 4ft HDMI 2.1 Cable - capable of 48Gbps. (Rated for 4k 120 or 8k 60) -- Connected from GPU to TV

BEST POSSIBLE OUTCOME

It would be nice if there is a solution that allows me to have the absolute clarity and crystal clear quality of the HD section of NCP while still having the 120hz refresh of the PC section.

I appreciate any and all help!

My suspicion is that the tv pc board can’t keep up with the panel at max.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

It has no issues running 4k 120Hz with an Xbox or a PS5. Though I'm suspecting a software lock in the TV firmware may be what is keeping me from having 120hz as it's native under the UHD section.

Oh wow.. that's really disappointing. After spending a decent bit on a 4k 120hz panel I'd expect to be able to use it to the fullest.. Looks like I'll be taking this back and looking for a decent 4k, 120hz monitor.  I'll take recommendations if you have any.
