Due to a previous discussion i have decided to NOT get X99.

But now another question arises: Should i get haswell refresh or wait for broadwell? I know most of the pros of waiting (DDR4, perhaps pci e gen 4.0, more sata express?, perhaps a 6 core i7 broadwell variant?)

As background information: I am currently finishing the MYP program in the end of Q2 and will be starting the IB Diploma Program at the end of Q3.

I really want a computer and a home network set up (i need a good computer for that), but i cannot decide whether the wait for broadwell is / will be worth it or not.

Please feel free to give your opinions or comment on anything that i have mentioned in this post.

As Broadwell will work on the Z97 platform has well as Devil's Canyon (Haswell Refresh), go with Devil's Canyon, by the time Broadwell comes out you'll still be able to sell the CPU for a good price and if Broadwell is a massive step forward you can upgrade

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - CPU Cooler: Deepcool Castle 240EX - Motherboard: MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC

RAM: 2 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro RBG 3200MHz - GPU: MSI RTX 3080 GAMING X TRIO

Broadwell isn't coming out in a long time. DDR4 Ram is nothing special for a long time (latency).

If you are going for an extreme OC build might be worth it to wait for Devil's Canyon (out in June I think).

If not? Any current Haswell is fine. If not an emphasis on multiplayer gaming. AMD 8320 can be avery good chip on a budget .Xeon is also an option if you aren't overclocking.

Haswell-E is a true 8 core and coming (who knows when) and that will be pretty awesome for non gaming stuff (all you need is an I5 to game with) but that is pricey and a ways off.

CPU:24/7-4770k @ 4.5ghz/4.0 cache @ 1.22V override, 1.776 VCCIN. MB: Z87-G41 PC Mate. Cooling: Hyper 212 evo push/pull. Ram: Gskill Ares 1600 CL9 @ 2133 1.56v 10-12-10-31-T1 150 TRFC. Case: HAF 912 stock fans (no LED crap). HD: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB. Display: Dell S2340M IPS. GPU: Sapphire Tri-x R9 290. PSU:CX600M OS: Win 7 64 bit/Mac OS X Mavericks, dual boot Hackintosh.

Yes, Haswell-E is coming out.

You both are getting it pretty much wrong. Haswell-E is the high end enthusiast CPU line-up based on the X99 chipset while the haswell refresh, codenamed "Devil's Canyon" is based on the Z97 chipset.

Not a bad idea. So you suggest i go with an i3 for the time being?

Xeon is also an option if you aren't overclocking.

I am not very keen on overclocking as in my opinion the price: performance gained ratio is more like 2 or 1.5:1. I see this especially in my (13 year old) brothers i5 4670k build (which i built).

Which Xeon would you suggest that works with the LGA 1150 socket?

DDR4 Ram is nothing special for a long time (latency)

I also agree with you on this, as it has happened before (when DDR3 was released).

So i think i'll get a 32GB kit (or 64GB if i go with a Xeon) just for the "future proofing" or perhaps get 8GB or 16GB and then get DDR4 once it has surpassed DDR3 in most aspects.
