So basically im 18 years old and I would really like to get a job working with computers. Computers are what I am passionate about and something I REALLY would love to expand my knowledge in and I plan on going to college for electrical engineering or computer engineering, although 95% of the people on this forum probably know a lot more than me (the reason I joined the forum was to help myself learn) I was just wondering if anybody had any advice on getting a job at local computer repair shops etc.. I don't have a certifications or anything of that sort... Just what I have taught myself and the fact that I am very interested in learning more about computers. I badly want a job involving repairing computers and stuff especially since now the retail store I am working at is closing down. So any advice people have is welcome. Also I live in the US (Kansas to be exact) if that makes any difference to any of you.

Just draw up a CV and apply to some local computer stores, as long as you come across as enthusiastic as you seem to be you should hopefully get some interviews. Then you can you can let them know about your knowledge and your willingness to learn.

The worst you can do is try.

I'm just a soul who is up to no good.

The only thing with that is that I am not even attending college yet, I graduate from high school in like a week lol so what would I really even put on it? Im assuming a CV is like a resignation letter right?

CV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curriculum_vitae

I'm in the same boat as you, high school ending in about a month and I need a job. Unfortunately, there are not really any computer related stores around here except for Best Buy.
I still have tons to learn about computers, but I know more than the average person.(I think)

I was in the same situation 3 years ago. It's hard to find a good retail computer job these days, especially if you don't have experience. I think your best bet is best buy. I applied there and I made it all the way to the last interview...then they gaveup on me. I'll share my experience.

For the personality test they will state various scenarios and ask for your opinion. NEVER PICK THE MIDDLE OPTION. You either strongly agree or strongly disagree. I think it was more of a mind game to me. You have to have (or know) the type of mentality that best buy looks for. The person that never commits a crime, is always honest...is loyal..is a leader or team player...you know the usual.

My first interview with best buy was knowledge based. I applied to work in the computer department and they asked me to list ALL of the accessories you can sell along side a random laptop with TOP specs. My friend who applied with me was asked the same question, but with an Ipad instead of a laptop. (I need to list at least 6 before they pass me)The most IMPORTANT thing you should say is the warranty. That is where they make big money.

The second interview was more personality based. I was nervous and had to "wing" most of the questions on the spot...probably why I didn't get in. They asked me about my work habits,if I liked doing the same things over again everyday, and anything else they haven't addressed.

Hope that helps if you plan to apply at best buy. Best of luck.

Very useful info. I might be applying there myself sometime soon if these other jobs don't pan out and I'll keep all of that in mind.

Apply everywhere. We have been hiring for a while at my work and the one thing my boss always says is "They werent right for our team" We have had lots of highly skilled people come in and interview but they just arent right for us.

So even if you are under qualified, if you suit the team at a particular place they would probably hire you knowing that you will fit in faster and in general be more benificial to the existing team.
