GameMax PSU Cable Compatibility

OctoAito

Hello! About a year ago I picked up a GameMax 850W Power Supply (https://www.amazon.com/GAMEMAX-Supply-Modular-Motherboard-RGB-850/dp/B0B1B1QZKP) and it only came with 2 PCIe 8 pin cables. I need a third one since I am planning on buying an RTX 3080 soon.

However, I am unsure of which cables are compatible with it, and can't find the list of compatibility anywhere either.

I know GameMax is just a rebrand of whoever mass produces the power supplies, so maybe they'll have a known compat list?

Either way, I can't find one, and am in need of help.

I see on their support they have a listing for replacement cables from Aliexpress but I just really don't wanna go through that site lmao. Was hoping they'd be compat with some other brand or something

Unfortunately I tried that already, if it is there then it'd be under a brand I don't recognize

No.  Gamemax is not a rebrand.  It's a terrible PSU made at a terrible factory called Sohoo that nobody else uses except Spanish company called Nfortec that most people have never heard of.  Gamemax is Sooho's house brand.

At the risk of sounding harsh:  I honestly wouldn't use that PSU to power a potato.  Never mind a 3080.

Oh, if you like me enjoy tinkering with stuff *and* sparks you could use it as a mini bench PSU for random contraptions, I've used an old TT TR2 to power some lights, a soldering iron of my design and a mini hot plate that acts as cup warmer during cold days, surprisingly it still holds, trick is to use the right wire gauges and plugs/sockets for your thingies. I wouldn't power a PC with something like that though, things I plug into it are cheap, sturdy and easily repairable.

Yeah. Not only do the ratings not make sense, but if you know how the sausage is made and see the inside of this thing, you can tell there's no QC anywhere along the line.

I have a Gamemax 80+ gold 850 watt psu and its amazing. I have it powering my i7-12700k and Radeon RX 6700xt with no problems whatsoever. So basically you're wrong.

Boom. That thing must be closer to 300W real world load, with luck and insane ripple.

This one's hilarious:

  Reveal hidden contents

Read the values. First we have 20A at 3.3V + another 20A at 5V give you only 100W, then 70A at 12V BUT then the "Max. Output Wattage" is just 500?! QUICK MAFFS. If that's also printed on the label then it's actually hilarious.

If they didn't include all the compatible cables with the unit that alone speaks a LOT of what they're selling.

Do yourself a favor and please get a decent power supply, not for the 3080 but for the rest of your computer.

I know this thread is quite old but what did you end up doing? I'm in the exact same boat with the same exact psu.

If it's me, I'd read & do what @Caroline said above, and care for my house's safety.

There is approximately 99% chance I edited my post

The only compatible cables are from Aliexpress, as far as I could find. You could try your luck with the PSU, and so far mine hasn't given me any issues, but I'm using a GTX 960, so it draws way less than 850w.

There are two possibilities here

1. OP removed that time bomb from his PC but didn't care to update the thread and lived happily ever after

2. OP was too late and the PSU exploded, killing his entire computer and possibly starting a small fire

Replace it. I'll add something to my previous comment: never open a power supply if you don't know what you're doing or how it works in order to mod it.

LOL yeah it is a ticking time bomb, but I'm too poor to replace it right now. I haven't bought a 3080, I was just wanting to check if they'd work before I bought one.
