Hey guys so um was just wondering if the core i5 2500k is still a good processor for the next 4 to 5 years or so. still using it,  overclocking it at 4.2 ghz. do you think i should upgrade to haswell or just stay with it ? i mostly do gaming so i7's won't be necessary at this point.

The I5 2500K won't be a good processor after X99.

It will work just fine, for the next 4-5 years though.

I would keep the i5 2500k, Haswell is a wasteful upgrade if you don't need the onboard APU. Unless you need the extra memory speed or more Sata 6Gb ports then go Haswell.

its a brilliant cpu still, i would go higher than 4.2ghz though because it will be a bit slow at that speed 4.6-4.8ghz is easy on most z77 boards and is equivalent to a 4.2-4.4ghz haswell

I had a i5 2500k (blew it up) This cpu overclocks very well and well be more than good enough for gaming. there is not really a difference  going to third gen or 4th only power usage and money. I dont think you would notice a difference.

how did you manage to blow it up?

Yes but give it a healthy OC like 4.7Ghz or higher.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

I have it, and it's awesome. You should be fine for about 4 years, depending on what you do. Im not a hardcore gamer (Ghost Recon Phantoms, LoL, the occasional JC2 Multiplayer Mod), but I'll be playing Star Citizen when Dog Fighting module is released, but getting a better CPU wont really help. So personally, I'd be fine for 4 years too.

Folding for LTT since April 2016.

stay with the 2500k. i would only buy haswell if your are building a fresh system. There is no real reason to upgrade from sandybridge as the performance gains will be minimal
