Help with driver installation?

Currently installing windows 10 on my pc. Specs are 3070, 9700k Aorus z390 ultra. I’m confused which chipset drivers to install on the aorus site. I see random stuff like INF or intel engine management all under the sun heading “chip set” could someone link which the correct chipset drivers is and if there are any other drivers I need to install?

For windows 10, usually windows already have drivers for each of your devices, no need to manually install them, unless it's not on the windows driver library.

 

to install drivers yourself, there should be an executable file for those drivers, you don't need to install it manually (with inf files).

go to the motherboard page, click support, in the download area, get the latest drivers.

for the gpu its best you go to nvidia support page and download the 3070 driver.

It is admittedly more confusing than it needs to be. But if you look carefully at how things are worded, they are just duplicate drivers for older versions of windows. So if there are two or more drivers with the same name, then pick only the latest one. For example:

 

 

That said, this board hasn't seen any updates since late 2021. Windows will probably do a pretty good job installing drivers that will work. As @SupaKomputa mentioned, just get your GPU drivers direct from Nvidia.

 

If you want to make sure everything has a driver, you can check Device Manager for errors.

Those 3 from Chipset, the most recent stable BIOS, Audio, and then any of the Utility ones are the ones I did.

Would it be a sin to let windows take care of those? I keep reading that anything other than gpu drivers are unnecessary and can cause a bloated registry because new drivers are installing over old ones. I just read that so I may be wrong.

Sure, let Windows handle it.  Most likely you'd install INF and then Windows update would flag it for updating anyway.  I do it since I am old and we used to HAVE to or AMD wouldn't even boot, long ago.

Only do those things if you have a problem, otherwise let windows sort it out, usually windows have the most stable drivers, may not be the newest, but it works.

motherboards manufacturer only listed the drivers up to a certain time, the better way is to go directly to the chip vendors like intel / realtek etc.

Registery bloat doesn't effect anything... Windows does actually do good work on drivers since Win10. You really need to use manual installs on very rare occasions. Also, having "old" drivers doesn't harm anything. You can fix things with newer drivers, but not updating drivers doesn't break anything.
