How likely is it, that my GPU was doa?

Kevtschi

So three days ago I finished my first Pc build. I was so happy that I finally made it. I plugged it to the plug socket and turned it on and… it seemed to work. I was even happier.

Therefore I wanted to plug in the monitor and get started, but it was weird.

When I plugged in the DP-Cable it made a somewhat loud sound. I was a bit concerned but didn’t think too much of it. But when I looked at the screen I was terrified. The BIOS looked really weird. It kept flickering bizarrely, so I saw different parts of the screen for spilt seconds, until another one popped out (see video).

I thought that this maybe has something to do with the ports, so I switched them. The only other one that seemed to be „working“ was a HDMI-port, but bios looked the same, unfortunately. When I tried plugging my monitor to the display port again, it was dead, too. So I was left with TWO DEAD DPs, ONE DEAD HDMI port and one working one.

I thought that this has to do with the GPU (the cables and the monitor are working properly) so I went to a PC repair service and he tried to plug his monitor to my Pc. His monitor didn‘t flicker, but (GigaByte’s) BIOS still didn’t look like how it should. It was weirdly yellowish and the top of the screed was pixelated, so you couldn’t see the top (see picture).

After this he plugged in two of his GPUs and everything worked fine. But in contrary to my his ones, mine didn’t need an external power supply (his were quite old).

After this I returned my GPU and I‘m waiting for my replacement, but I don’t want something like this happening again, so I‘m asking myself: Can I be at fault for this? Is there something I could have done wrong that it ended up like this, for example wrong PSU cable management? Or is it the manufacturer‘s fault?

I‘d really appreciate any help I can get 🙂

My components are:

Intel Core i5-12400F

Gigabyte B660 gaming x DDR4

Gigabyte AMD Radeo RX 6700 XT eagle

Fractal design ion gold 750W PSU

Sounds like a dead GPU if you replaced it and it works fine.

@dizmoYes I do think that the GPU is dead, but I'm scared that it died because of a mistake I made or because of a faulty PSU. As I said, the other GPUs didn’t need an external power supply via PCIe-Cables, so I figured, that that could be the problem. Could this be it?

Or do you simply think that the GPU was doa?

I will say this, while it's not technically required, it's better if all cables are connected before powering up (including monitor).

I don't badmouth others' input, I'd appreciate others not badmouthing mine. *** More below ***

Due to the above, I've likely revised posts <30 min old, and do not think as you do.

(snip)

That's all artifacting, and artifacts are a sign of a dead GPU. It's probably not anything you did. It's definitely weird to get a DOA GPU in 2022, but it does still happen.

IIRC, your model of PSU is generally regarded as good.

I think it was DOA. You won't really create issues like that by doing anything wrong. Especially any kind of cable management.

If you bought aftermarket cables and they weren't the right type for the PSU, that's a possibility.
