Use of 2x20 pin connector on single-board computers

Lately, I was wondering what is the use of those 2x20 pin connectors that you can find on single-board computers like Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi, Arduino, etc. What can I connect to those?

GPIO. Almost anything, RPI compatible devices have many communication protocols that use some of the GPIO pins.
