Need help with building a desktop for Gaming in windows/Linux Workstation (dual boot) with 2-3 monitors. Appreciate any help I can get :)

This build is constructed to allow for a second GPU. The motherboard supports two PCIe 5.0 slots from the CPU. They will run x8 when the second GPU is installed.

  • Dual boot - windows and linux
  • Gaming 1440p/4K at 140+ hz. Games like cyberpunk, farcry, assassins creed, tomb rider, etc. - Gaming in Windows
  • work in linux (ubuntu) - work on neural networks, computer vision and high computation algorithms, ros 1.0 and ros 2.0
  • will use CUDA so need NVIDIA gpu

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 

  • Would connect 2-3 monitors to my desktop. Monitors are 1440p/4K resolution with high refresh rates 120+ hz 

This is my first own desktop and would like to buy and assemble a good one which can last me 5+ years on which I can work (in linux) and also game (in windows).

How crazy of a system do you need? Two gpu:s for neural stuff? Or is one 3080ti already more than enough.

What about a 3090ti instead of two gpu's ? Is there a benefit with two gpu's over a single 3090ti?

Two is usually a lot faster than one. 3090ti might be +10% but another 3080ti could be closer to +80-90%.

But also 3080ti does not support SLI. If I choose 3090ti now then maybe I can expand in the future as well? 
I am assuming when you say dual gpus, you mean 2 3080ti’s. But I feel a 3090ti for now is better because of gaming and if needed I can expand and get more vram in the future?

2x32gb may be better than 2x16gb, but other than that this build seems solid.

2 GPUs would be faster as long as you don't need that much VRAM and know how to distribute your workload across those devices. A single GPU is easier to work with and allows you to further expand later on.

SLI is not important whatsoever tho, you can run both GPUs without problems under tensorflow/pytorch without SLI/NVLink.

So should I go with the DDR4-3600 or the DDR5 ram? Sorry I don’t have much knowledge about Memory and things.

Most cheap Intel 1700-boards have the other physical x16 slots wired through chipset offering pcie3 x4 so more premium ones are ok for this use-case. You will also need a huge psu to be ready for dual 3090ti and a case that can handle the heat output.

With your budget would it be smarter to go with two GPU's? Nvidia for Windows and AMD for Linux. Last I heard Nvidia cards were a nightmare to get working on Linux.

No. DDR5 is so new pretty sure no one right now takes advantage of DDR5 speeds at a consumer level.

No. DDR5 is so new pretty sure no one right now takes advantage of DDR5 speeds at a consumer level.

Nvidia works fine for Linux, and an AMD gpu would be useless for OP's task on Linux since it requires Cuda. If a 2nd slot ever ends up being used, it better be with a 2nd Nvidia gpu.

Not really worth it, you'll barely get any performance improvements for a hefty cost.
