12 years old PSU finally dead?

GabrielCM

Today my monitor started to lose display signal at random. PC kept running.

No GPU near dead related issues before the above stated issue.

Now my PC refuses to boot. Sometimes it did boot, but lost display signal even quickier while browsing the bios setup or in windows loading screen.

Now permanently stuck on boot sequence with nothing on the screen.

Motherboard Debug Leds points to GPU.

Is this in fact a dead PSU related issue?

My PC: R5 1600, 8GB RAM, GTX 1060 6GB and a 12 years old 430w Seasonic Power Supply.

Dead PSU usually results in no power at all. Sounds like your issue is your GPU.

Suspicious, to say the least. The unfortunate thing is that if the power supply had a failure, there's a chance it took something else with it, like the motherboard, CPU, or graphics card. You'll want to test with a friend's PC if you can.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Now it booted... Super weird.

Let's see if it will last.

Took a photo with HW Monitor on.

I limited the CPU to 4 cores in the Bios Setup before creating this topic.

Something weird happened yesterday while playing Age of Conan (mmo) for the first time.

While playing this game (about 10min in), the game ctd and I got an error message saying that my gpu driver has crashed. Then I lost display signal and had to hard reset my pc.

This was the event that triggered the first appearance of the issue.

Today I uninstalled the gpu driver using DDU and installed the most recent one.

Then the issue became more frequently and eventually lead to the creation of this topic.

PC still running with 100% GPU usage for 30 minutes, tho.

If you're having power delivery problems from the power supply, it could be affecting the GPU. But the only way to know for sure would be a long term test with another power supply.

When you say it happened more frequently, how frequent do you mean? Once a day? Week?

Just today. It's been almost a day since I first had this monitor lost display signal issue.

By "frenquently" I mean how fast I lost display signal after boot up.

I'm still thinking that Age of conan might have fucked up my PC somehow. At first I was shocked because I've never seen this "gpu driver has crashed" error before. I even cursed and uninstalled the game. Maybe this was just a coincidence and the game has nothing to do with it.

Let's see how my pc will behave until my new PSU arrives.

Unlikely the case. If these crashes persist after PSU change, then first stop is your GPU.

I've never heard of a GPU playing peek-a-boo or "now you see me, now you don't". I'd say weak / bad capacitors in the GPU, would definitely cause issues with inconsistent boot. Does this occur more often with extended shutdown periods, but not so much with startup within a short while of a shutdown? That would point to bad capacitors. The idea here is that capacitors act as a reservoir for startup surge load current to be drawn from. When they go bad, they don't hold this current indefinitely as they should. Which can cause startup issues if left shutdown for too long.
