just got 2g fiber though att. only problem is their modem only has 1x5gb port and 4x1gb. Me and my roommate both want to run at the higher speeds. what is my best solution? would running a mutigig network switch work or would i need to get a full mutigig router? i am not the greatest when it comes to networking as this is the 1st house iv lived in where internet above 1gig was a option. also for context what my plan is to have both mine and my roommates pcs set up for mutigig. the house is a smart house with a built in mesh wifi. that one i just want to go on a 1g port because i doubt its even rated for higher so i dont really need a mutigig router with wif.

Bear in mind the main benefit is both you and your room mate can do Gigabit at the same time.

Even if you setup the network so you can theoretically do 2Gbit, there are no guarantees you will achieve that on any single site.

Faster packages are mainly intended for when lots of people in the household are using it at the same time, rather than to get top speed to a single client.  Its always best to have more bandwidth than you need so you never run into bufferbloat.

mutigig network switch

If your using the AT&T box as a router then this would be the best option. Just bear in mind that multi gig gear is going to be expensive.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

If you want a full NBase-T switch (10/5/2.5/1/100) then about the cheapest I see new on Amazon is about $300:

If you only want 2.5G ports then you can get a 5 port switch for about $140:
