Is Windows defender good enough?

I have been trying to find a good Anti virus, and I settled on Avast for a while, but I feel like it slows down my system too much, so I was wondering if WIndows Defender is good enough to run by itself.  I don' download thing from unknown sources very often, I don't Torrent, so I am on the safe side of things, thoughts?

anti-virus suites are useless if you're not digging for snuff or a local hit and run

as long as you're not an idiot about what you do or go licking the metaphorical doorknob by opening every junk email in your mailbox, you're fine.

 

A standalone scanner like Malwarebytes or Spybot is all you should ever really need if you've made it this far. 

 

I haven't done more than that since like 2007(?) and have yet to get a virus, and I even find free stuff on the internet.

I actually use Windows Defender and it is great. I actually have avast and avg free on my system aswell. Setting it up for false positives etc. Make sure to set your protection to a schedule so it only runs when you want it to.

Windows only support 1 A/V. So the only one working is the last one installed.

I cycle through them enabling one at a time of course. I probably should have mentioned that.

For windows 8/8.1 YES it is enough for the individual regular person. For windows 7, NOOO you have to either download one other the other good ones or Microsoft Security Essentials.

I think so but I really recommend ESET. It's $40 a year but it is amazing. It doesn't slow down your system at all and the interface is slick.
