Why do i see these spikes in a total new drive?

Orian Pax
Go to solution Solved by Kilrah,

HDDs are slow, pretty much anything they need to do will result in 100% usage. So yes it's normal.

I bought a new hdd. First ever windows 10 installed on it.

Not even internet is connected to it.

Haven't updated the windows either (then again i had downloaded the latest iso from Microsoft)

So what are these spikes?

And why are they there?

Is it normal?

Yes, you installed windows on an hdd instead of an ssd which can be had for 30 bucks in the current market for an unexplainable reason, so expect windows background tasks to last much longer, and have way higher disk usage during them.

Windows might be optimizing the file structure or whatever, and again because you installed it on an hdd in 2022, expect loads of 100% disk usage during whenever windows decides to do anything.

Please swap it for an ssd soon, thanks.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Definitely Normal. after all. You specifically sprung out for a HDD when the most common storage now is SSDs. get an SSD ASAP and use that for Storage instead of a boot drive. your experience will suck. trust me i have only ever had Hard drives on my systems. even now i have a 10 year old Hard drive stuck Dualbooting windows with Manjaro Linux that has 13,500 usage hours on it, even if you get a Cheapo DRAMless SSD it will perform leagues better than a HDD. a 240 gig one can be had for the price of a hard drive anyways.
