No.

For gaming, is there a significant difference between the ryzen 7 5800x and the ryzen 9 5900x? I mainly play games such as war thunder and war frame, but I occasionally play strategy games such as HOI4 and Stellaris which would probably benefit the  most from extra cores, but I am not entirely sure on that. In addition, I occasionally play around with VMs, but I am not sure if more cores will make a significant difference.

No.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

But there's a norticable difference with the 5800X3D.

Interesting, from the benchmarks I have seen, there is on average, a 15% increase in performance.

While I agree that there is no significant difference in gaming now, things are always changing. While there may be no demonstrable benefit today, you never know what advancement may show the difference later. Truth be told, I only wound up with a 5900X because I originally planned to upgrade my previous rig, which had an MSI board their own site listed as supporting it with a BIOS update. Only after I bought one was I told that they couldn't guarantee the board would survive the BIOS update. Input from others here pointing out potential for cooling issues and lack of options for PSU upgrades led to a full build. Otherwise I might have simply overclocked the 1700 I was using, or went with somewhere between a 3700-3900 or even a 5600-5700.

But all that said, you never know what's coming down the pike that could use that extra power. And it's possible the 5900X might run cooler under certain circumstances if it doesn't have to work as hard.

I don't badmouth others' input, I'd appreciate others not badmouthing mine. *** More below ***

Yes. If the game uses the cores.

I had a 5800x and upgraded it to a 5900x.

Both used a RTX 3080 ti.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider uses cores but Horizon Zero Dawn doesn't.

Here are my results.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider does use the cores so the 5900x wins.

                                  1080p        1440p       4k

5800x(8 core)            198fps        163fps      96fps

5900x(12 core)          211fps        175fps     105fps

Here is Horizon Zero Dawn.  It does not use the cores so they perform about the same.

                                  1080p        1440p       4k

5800x(8 core)            156fps        138fps      89fps

5900x(12 core)          156fps        138fps      88fps

The OP mentioned significant difference. As in something that's going to be heavily felt and affect their experience.

There is a difference and if more games use more cores it will grow.

I did not replace the 5800x with a 5900x because I was unhappy with the performance.  I did it to see the difference.

As for "heavily felt".

The last time I "heavily felt" a difference between CPUs was going from 4 to 6 cores in 2017.  Now it is just mild improvements and that best describes the difference between a 5900x and a 5800x.

Yeah, my father was using a laptop that had 2 CORES for 10 years and finally relented after it almost screwed up a certification exam he was taking. When we got him a new one, with I think 4 or 6 cores, 12 GB ram, and 512 GB ssd, last Christmas, he said there was a giant difference in performance.

That example isn't even remotely relevant here, unfortunately. These are two CPU's of the same generation.
