3080 with 550 w

Yes you read the title correctly, basically a friend of mine upgraded his pc with a 3080, however, his psu is a 550w, and somehow he is able to run his 3080 with it (I think his cpu is a 9th / 10th gen intel i7) and I'm trying to work out how on earth this is possible bearing in mind the power draw of the gpu is already very high

He should be at the limit, a 3080 needs 320W, the CPU around 100 and 50 for the rest, so it can work

Possible, yes, some good psu have a tolarence / headroom up to 10% of the rated capacity.

But will it last? probably not.

A stock 3080 usually uses 350 watts stock. There are some budget ones like the MSI Ventus that use 320 watts but that is the lowest they go.

9th and 10th gen Intels don't use a lot of power gaming.

My i9 10900k in most games uses about 89 watts. It is only on all core applications like Cinebench that it uses 220 watts stock and 320 watts overclocked.

So even i9 10900k with a 3090(370 watts) only uses about 500 to 550 watts gaming.
