Long time PC Guy - First time building my own rig.

Budget (including currency): $1600-1750 AUD

Country: Australia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly gaming and general media consumption like browsing, movies etc. Would like to play AAA titles, at least for the near future.

Other details: Keeping my Samsung Evo 970+ 1TB SSD for now. Aiming for 1080p gaming at 100++ FPS.

Hi Guys,

I would like to pick your brain and need some help choosing between Team Red or Team Blue. Here in Australia, AMD is more competitively priced, and we can score a decent MOBO for at least $70-100 less than Intel, even though intel's CPU is a bit cheaper on its own. I have watched a ton of reviews/comparisons and TBH there is not much separating the 5600 from the 12400F, apart from the possible forward-facing compatibility scenarios, but I think that I will have to change the mobo for it anyway, down the line, since both DDR4 and 5 are not supported on the same board (same goes with PCI5 but I could be wrong).

Do you think it is worth the price difference to go for Intel and what other parts would you replace to hit the sweet spot and stay within budget. I have included my Notion list of parts with certain prices that I could not find through PCPartPicker but have included both.

Points to consider:

  • For Intel many suggest to go for a MSI PRO B660M-A which ranges from $219 (Standard) ~ $269 (Wi-FI).
  • In the same price as the baseline Gigabyte B660M I have selected, I can get a pretty solid MSI Mobo with Wi-Fi included.
  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600 is down to $266 only for tonight.

Thank You in advance, can't wait to get started. P.S got the case already 😄

That is a wonderful alternate build list. However, even I was kind of conned by that Gigabyte Graphic Card, that's actually an RTX 3060Ti unfortunately. But overall the suggestion is amazing.
