Budget (including currency): About 3000 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mainly games like Sea of Thieves, Most of the Call of duty games, Minecraft and just random games I install when im bored. Also VR games

Other details: Currently have a laptop. So its a big upgrade. Yes I know its overkill but I want to be able to get 1080P 240 fps gaming on any game and be able to run vr game at 60 fps no problem (laptop cant do that very well). Also please tell me if theres anything else pc related im missing i have thermal paste picked out monitor other peripherals too. Also lmk if theres some compatibility issues cooling is a coolermaster AIO 240ml going to get some extra case fans. Also would prefer a case. Pretty much any other details a new pc builder might need. Thanks anyone who responds.

Case: not too sure first pc build need recommendations on something that's M-ATX and is easy to cable manage

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X

Mother Board:     MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

Memory:     G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory

Storage Main Drive:     Seagate Barracuda Compute 4 TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive

GPU: Depends on price when I'm ready to buy

PSU: Depends on GPU I get

one thing i didnt think of though is that I want to over clock too. is that overclockable?

the i7-12700k or i7-12700kf are unlocked overclockable CPU's the difference between the regular k and kf versions are there aren't any intel integrated graphics on any f chips which doesn't matter if you have a dedicated GPU also the f chips are obviously cheaper without the integrated graphics

You do need a Z series motherboard to overclock though. Personally I'd go with something that supports DDR4 instead  of DDR5 as you won't see an improvement, but will see a significant hole in your wallet going with DDR5.

As for the rest of your proposed build, why do you want MATX? There aren't a ton of good boards that size.

I'd also strongly recommend getting a larger SSD. If you don't have many programs you install (not games), then maybe a 500GB for Windows and a 1TB for games. Or even a 256GB for Windows and a 1TB for games. Some combination of that. Games are only getting bigger, and running them off of spinning rust can be a painful experience.

Honestly, right now I'd really hold off doing anything. We're finally seeing massive price drops across the board, and Intel has their GPU line coming out soon. Plan to buy everything in the summer. Buying piece by piece is never a good choice (unless you do budget builds like I do).

This is kind of an exercise in futility right now. You are wanting to build in the summer. In the late summer, we might have Raptor Lake/Zen 4/ADA Lovelace, etc. Those will knock the socks off of anything you are speccing right now

The 980 EVO is...overpriced.

Don't bother making a list until you're ready to build, pricing changes too much.

The size difference between the two cases isn't really that big, especially depending on the cases you're picking.

I'd just put it on the floor honestly.

I'd never recommend an MSI motherboard, or AsRock. Gigabyte or Asus get my votes. Something DDR4 based, which should narrow it down quite a bit. Hardware Unboxed usually has excellent motherboard roundups.

I...kind of agree and kind of don't. I don't think we'll see a substantial price decrease of DDR5 before then, so I still wouldn't recommend AM5.

DDR5 is hot garbage right now I agree. Thank gosh alder lake supports DDR4 still. Worst case, OP can grab a 13700k and a discounted DDR4 Z690 board with bios flashback (they all have it).
