Long term storage

SignatureSigner

My dad is looking for an external ssd to back up a decent amount of storage onto to have a copy if our imac ever has issues. He would need around 1-2tb of storage and this drive might be unplugged for extended periods of time. Would this be an issue? I know some ssds can start to lose data after extended periods of time and would hate for that to happen.

Any recommendations?

Key points:

-reasonably fast (Its not crucial but would be nice to have somtehing zippy)

-decent ammount of storage options if he decides he wants to get a 2tb drive or smthn crazy.

-long term reliability!

under 150$

Thanks!

I did look on amazon and found a few options. Would like some feedback if these are good options.

Drive 1

Drive 2

Drive 3

Thanks!

Thats not some, all SSDs need power. Your father is best served using a mechanical drive if hes going to leave it disconnected for long persiods of time.

For USB I'd go the route of the WD EasyStore since their known to pack the Red Series drives into them. Plus if all else fails, you can crack the casing open and it's just a standard 3.5in drive in there.

That's quite expensive for a 4TB drive. You can buy a bare 4TB Red or Red Plus and a separate enclosure for less.

Get 4 identical used cheap hard drives of any brand and whatever size you need. 4 redundant cheap drives will always be more reliable than a single new drive. Can always beat reliability with redundancy
