Problems with network drives and folders

Devryd
Go to solution Solved by Kilrah,

Are you using hostname or ip to map it as network drive? Hostname doesn't route across networks so won't work over the vpn.

Hi,

I have a synology ds216j NAS and I am running a VPN from it. I have a single volume on the NAS. If I map this volume as a network folder on my laptop, I can access it via the vpn, even if I am not in my home network. If I map it as a network drive (with a letter) it doesnt work. The solution sounds pretty simple: just use a network folder. The problem is, a few programs I use, dont work correctly with network folders. Does anybody know, how I can get network drives to work even from a remote location?
Thanks for your help.

PS: i wasnt sure, whether this belongs in the NAS or networking sub forum, because it belongs to both topics.

Define doesn't work. Does it work when you are on the network physically? Is it possible that you are running into a DNS problem through your VPN?

I just dont get a connection to the volume if it is mapped as a network drive. For some reason it works, if its mapped as a network folder

You'll see on the title whether it's an ip or name.

Disconnect it, find the ip of your NAS, reconnect using \\[ip] instead of \\NAS.

Your VPN isn't properly passing hostnames through
