So i recently built a PC that will get me through college. I am going to University of Texas in Austin, TX for Computer engineering with a minor in Computer science. I recently ordered a 1440p ASUS monitor and the last thing i need is a GPU to last me the 4 years in college. I have a GTX 660 but it is my friends so when I leave I must return it. So, the question is should i get a GPU now or use the Intel craphics ( yes CRAPhics) until Maxwell. Overall i have a 1200$ budget I can allocate to my PC over the next 4 years at UT. That includes repairing things that break ( I tinker a lot ) or upgrading RAM or a CPU if needed.

It looks like it says I have a 550ti with a 780 in transit on my profile even though I clearly typed  ( GTX660 ). So disregard that.

First thing, once it works do NOT tinker with it.

But...But overclocking and stuff:(

I have no idea why. I typed in 660 a long time ago and when i go to look at my profile it says 660. I do not know why it says that.

What about a 780 and SLI or get a 980 in the future? Is the 780 a bad deal? With no one knowing about Maxwell and the 780Ti being  right there it seems like it is in a awkward predicament.

well 780 sli will last a good amount of time seeing that it does perform very well even when doing 3x 1080p monitors and since you only ordered one 1440p it will be good for about 4 years like you said you wanted, or at least it should be

DO NOT BUY 780ti IT IS HORRIBLE IN PRICE/PERFORMANCE. People here recommend the 780ti on the drop of a dime even though you get almost the same performance for half the price with a 290 or 780. Get a 290, and save a hell of a lot of money. Oh, and don't do SLI or CF, just save the money to buy an entirely new GPU in a few years. Rule #453: Don't future proof! Better to buy a 200$ card now and another in two years than to buy a 400$ now, because the $200 in two years will be better.
