Hey, all.

I have come here looking for help that I can't seem to find anywhere else. I recently bought Fallout 4 on steam, as it is my most favourite game of all time. I love it. I set all of the settings to low, out of sheer fear of it not working or lagging on my computer, even though my computer has more than high enough specs to run it. Here is my computer's info:

Model: HP Pavilion x360 convertible 15-dq1xxx

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz   2.30 GHz

RAM: 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable)

Windows Version: 10

Here are the specs needed for Fallout 4:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7 4790 3.6 GHz/AMD FX-9590 4.7 GHz or equivalent.
  • Ram: 8 GB.
  • OS: Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required)
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB/AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB or equivalent.
  • Pixel Shader: 5.0.
  • Vertex Shader: 5.0.
  • Total Size: 30 GB.
  • Graphics Memory: 3 GB.

I got into the game and everything was going fine on the title screen. Then, when I started making my character, I noticed severe input lag. SEVERE. So I went to the internet and changed everything I could, and I mean everything. I changed .ini files, I updated my drivers, everything. But nothing worked. Does anybody have advice? It should be able to work, right? If it doesn't, I guess I'll have to live with that. If it doesn't, I'll probably start looking for a budget PC that I can buy with the money I have as a college student. I just really love this game. I miss it. But we'll cross that second bridge when we come to it. Otherwise, please help. I don't know what to do.

i see you didnt list a GPU… I know its a laptop, but im not sure how you got to that conclusion without a dedicated GPU seemingly?

At what resolution are you playing?

Welcome to the forums. In the future please try to make your thread titles descriptive of the topic or the issue you need assistance with. Every week there are dozens of threads on these forums just titled some variation of "pls help me."

As others have said, the specs of your laptop are inadequate for a good experience in Fallout 4. Although your CPU may be newer than the recommended, the integrated graphics capabilities it has are still well behind the graphics cards listed in the game's system requirements.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

First with the answer - as pointed above, a dedicated GPU is a must. Aside from that, the requirements you've posted are the minimal, probably the recommended... nevertheless those old CPUs are desktop CPUs and are still MUCH faster than your newer mobile one. In userbenchmark the i7-10510U is described as "Great cpu with rubbish graphics. It's able to run E-Sport games at 720p 60-80 fps and 1080p at 40". AAA titles are basically a complete no-no w/o dedicated GPU.

On that point... I don't mean to be rude or sound like an angry PCMR member, but why do people still buy laptops for gaming??? I get the appeal of having a mobile computer, but c'mon - no one is gaming on their laptop just on battery power, at least not for more than 30 mins. Even with the current sh*tshow prices for the GPUs, desktop computers are much cheaper and WILL be much cheaper in the long run. If you need to upgrade at any point, you can go component by component at a different time and won't need to throw the whole PC out when you need simply a new GPU or CPU. I mean i have clients who come to me w/o knowing exactly what they want, all they know is they want to be able to play AAA games, won't take it anywhere, but want it mobile because "u never know". I explain them in great detail why a desktop PC is a much better choice than a $3000 laptop, then they go for a $1500 laptop and later wonder why the 2nd hand PC i've build for their kid is still faster for half the price of that laptop. Am i just too old-school to not get the appeal of a laptop ?!?
