Hello dear reader,

I've recently been experiencing extremely slow upload speeds (barely scratches 1mbp/s upload) while my download generally remains unaffected. I have ran a speed test on another system in my household (is positioned about the same distance away from the modem and is using a Wifi connection) and it get's between 6 and 10 mbp/s upload, which is a huge increase compared to my main system. I have also tried using a powerline adapter, a direct ethernet connection to the modem and also tried using wifi, each yielding the same results (good upload speed of about 50-70mbp/s, terrible download speed never going above 1.1mbp/s). I've also fully updated the windows operating system and it didn't change anything...

Could someone please help me?

Many thanks in advance,

Ivel.

Sounds like the problem is in your main box and not the actual internet connection.  There are various hardware or software things that could cause this.  Did the machine ever run at normal speeds? And if so when did it stop and were there any changes to the machine?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Sorry for such a late reply, been a busy week for me.

Yeah I agree, the issue must be with the computer which makes me very worried. The odd thing is that my download speeds and ping aren't really affected when comparing to other devices on the network, the upload speed is the only problem.

The system used to run at completely normal speeds, but I took my pc on a plane when I moved countries and I noticed the bad speeds after that, although I never really did any tests to prove that the plane flight might have damaged a component on the motherboard. With the internet still working mostly fine, it leads me to believe it's the operating system that is the problem, not the actual hardware, although I have found absolutely nothing supporting this theory on the internet (whenever I search how to improve upload speeds, it's always the normal bs about switching to ethernet or going closer to your modem if you're on wifi, which I've already tried both, nothing changed. I even checked if the Ethernet cable was faulty and it wasn't).

Such a weird situation, wish I knew of other people who have had this issue...

Update:

Just completely uninstalled the Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX200 160MHz drivers that operate my wifi and it changed nothing. I have no idea what to do at this point, I feel like I've tried everything I possibly can.

Did the system come with the Intel AX200 wireless adapter or did you upgrade from an old adapter?

Reseat the adapter and make sure the 2 antenna connectors are securely attached to the card. On a desktop system, avoid obstruction of signal by elevating the entire system and removing and surrounding objects.

Many third party companies rebrand the AX200, but at the core it's an Intel chipset that runs on Intel drivers. Download the latest AX200 drivers and install after uninstalling the previous version.

Let's establish a baseline.

  1. What speeds are you paying for from your ISP?
  2. What is the make/model of gateway or other device that provides you with WiFi?
  3. Is the above device connected to any other core device on the network?
  4. What are the wireless settings on said device? E.g. channels being used, bandwidth, security/encryption?
  5. Have you run a wireless survey to determine if there is any wireless interference in your area? Use WiFi Analyzer or WiFiman to assess the 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectra.

Connecting ethernet to Powerline is not the same as pure ethernet, so I wouldn't use that to compare, unless it's something you absolutely need. Although the technology has supposedly gotten better, it's still very finicky since it can be affected by various electrical factors.

1. I'm paying for speeds up to 100mbps download (devices on my network using either wifi or ethernet get 70 on average except for peak times between 8 and 10pm, where the speed dips all the way down to 10-20. Upload speed is capped to 10 but all devices on the network get between 6 and 9mbp/s on average, apart from my main pc, which can barely pull 1 (constantly fluctuates between 0.8 and 1.1).

2. Modem I'm using is the Telstra smart modem Gen 2 (provided to me by my ISP, Telstra).

3. What do you mean by it being connected to a core device on the network? Wirelessly it's only connected to the Modem, unless my storage pc is turned on then it's also connected to that for transferring/storing media and other documents.

4. Some of the WiFi properties are Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), 5ghz bandwith, the channel is 56, which is the same as what the other computer I use to for comparisons on my network is running on. In regards to security, my computer only has the windows firewall activated at the moment and deactivating it did not change the speed at all.

5. I can't see the wireless side of things being an issue, as using a perfectly operational ethernet cable yielded the exact same results as wireless did.

I also did some testing at my friend's house yesterday and the upload speed was perfectly fine there (comparing the speeds to my phone, which normally would get much better results compared to my pc if I'm on my home internet). With this in mind the only real reason for my bad upload speeds would surely be the modem I'm using... Maybe it's just not allocating my pc enough upload bandwidth compared to the other devices on my network for some unknown reason. Maybe things might change if I invest in a new modem or build my own?
