hypothetical pc antenna question

my wifi is fine for watching videos and the internet, but when i download a game my pc goes into potato mode.

I have the msi mortar b550m wifi, and i have those little antennas that can't be seen from the front or top.

My old build used to have the gigabyte b550 aorus elite ax v2, where i downloaded all of my games with great wifi and a great antenna that is corded.

could i change the antenna? if applicable, anything i would need to check for that?

You should be able to swap, but the antenna might not be matched so it's not guaranteed to be better. Worth a shot though

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Antennas for CB radios need to be adjusted to appropriate length for otherwise they can fry the radio when sending.  I don't know if that applies to WLAN antennas, but since they are using radio waves as well, maybe they can run into the same issue.

Always use a cable when you can ...

If you still have that other antenna, it won't hurt just to try it out. It's probably double the length of the little antennas, because all RF antennas are tuned to be a fraction or multiple of the average wavelength they're intended to pick up. (A "quarter wave" antenna is 1/4 the wavelength of the signal, a "half wave" half the length, etc. The "wavelength" is literally how far apart the "peaks" of the signals are, if you could somehow see and measure them.) You'll see a bit of an improvement in signal strength, but if that's still not enough you might have to try a directional antenna that points at your router.

But if you can run Ethernet, that's even better. Wired beats wireless on speed and stability. I'd even look into powerline networking before resorting to fancy WiFi antennas.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Based on the number of posts on this forum about powerline performance, I wouldn't.
