Why? I've genuinely done this many times. I'll post something and while I'm waiting for others to respond I'll keep searching on my own. Sometimes either with what someone else has commented or through my own findings I'll figure it out. So then I'll post the solution and mark it as solved incase others come across the thread in the future

I've seen a lot more abuse of this than I have productive merit.  And nothing is stopping an OP from posting up a fix for their original question--even if not marking it as a solution.

That won't mark the post as solved, though; and can make it harder for some people.

I do think that marking the original post as solution should be prevented, though.

If you see actual abuse, please do report it. As marking as best answer does affect on ranks/scores, farming it is in same category with post/like farming and moderation will deal with it.

 

But as notes, this has been discussed in past and there are legitimate reasons to mark ones own post as best answer. For example finding solution on your own. Or highlighting some portion of very long discussion.

i don't think getting rid of a useful feature to stop the few who abuse it is the way to go. if anything, it would make more sense to me to make it so that marking your own comment as the solution won't count towards your own solution numbers.
