Plex playback quality

I created a plex server in my home but the play back quality of my movies are horrible. 480p at best. Is there a way to fix this?

What is the expected bitrate of one of the movies playing that looks bad? You can check what's its streaming when streaming it under technical info.

It could be a setting on the Server itself. (see screenshots)

There is this quality setting

Spoiler

Plex1.thumb.PNG.07bbffcd187512b455e0e37ab7357975.PNG

and the remote streaming setting under remote access.

Here I posted about allowing remote access.

Your Server has the juice to push 4k movies. If you are downloading movies from the internet, you may be downloading poor quality ones. If they are Blueray rips that you did yourself, maybe the software is compressing them. If its not those 2 things, then something, either on the PLEX or Client side is making the quality bad.

When comes to the quality of movies and shows, the only thing that matters is Bitrate. This is how much data per second is shown on the screen.

This chart is a very rough bitrate to resolution scale. You can have a video with a 2160p resolution that has a bitrate of 6 and it might look like doodoo. The same way you can have a video with 1080p resolution with a bitrate of 50 and it'll look amazing. This comes at the cost of storage space and there is point where it won't make a difference visually. Again, you can check the bitrate of the video by looking at the file properties/details, or while you are streaming it on PLEX, you can look at the technical details.

Since you seem to have an unlimited amount of upload speed, you should be able to handle 4k remote streaming. Upload speed does not apply when you are within your LAN.

Have you gone into the Plex transcoding settings for remote playback? By default the remote transcode settings are pretty low. I have mine set to where it doesn't limit the remote or local streams. Your system shouldnt have any issues, Im running an unraid box with a Ryzen 1600 and Quadro K2200 and im streaming 1080p 8mbps to my phone without any issues.

On your AT&T router have you gone through and created a port forward for your plex server? AT&T's hardware tends to block everything unless you manually create the port forward. If you havent done this you wont be able to access the server for remote viewing.

Are you running a hardline to the plex server or are you using WIFI. WIFI is very unstable compared to a hardline and could be adding to your issues.

i run ethernet. not wifi. dont trust the stabilization of wifi. I have tried to port forward but i think its called pass through on att but no luck. i tried the transcoding settings and put them  on max with no luck.
