I am trying to wrap my head around port forwarding to be able to stream from my plex server while my VPN is on. I have gone through these steps found here https://www.comparitech.com/plex/plex-vpn-routing/

I get lost when I get to the point where I have to edit the config file. If I understand it correctly it is to allow any incoming requests for plex to be passed through the VPN. Please correct me if I'm wrong. If anyone could help me with this issue I would be greatly appreciative.

What operating system are you using on your Plex Server? Also what VPN are you using, and are you using the VPN just make Plex available remotely or are you using it for other things? Plex works without a VPN.

I am using windows 10, and I'm using privateVPN. I'm using the VPN for other reasons. 🤐

Well I am not sure how to configure the VPN portion, but as an example Here is mine:

Plex.thumb.PNG.480bc60a4f2b0853b47695f288041781.PNG

These settings are listed under remote access in Plex settings.

Under the Plex logo portion, starting from the right is my "open port" of 20221 This is attached to my public facing IP. From there it goes to the IP of the Plex server machine with the "close port" of 32400.

On your router end you will need to set a port forwarding rule of both UDP and TCP for the local IP of your Plex Machine and then set the open and close port accordingly. This will be different per router. A bonus would be able to set a static IP for the Plex Machine as well.

As far as your VPN goes, I would first have it disabled and make sure you can remote access with Plex, then after that is working, set up the VPN. That I cannot help you with.
