I'm trying to decide on which PSU to go for now and into the future. Hardware will be a high end AMD CPU (5950x) and high end Nvidia GPU (3070/3080 level or whatever the 4070/4080 ends up being).

I know the common answer is "get the higher wattage PSU" which makes sense but the more I looked around, it seems like the RM1000x isn't talked about as much as the RM850x. PCP also has the RM850x as the way more popular choice.

From what I read Corsair never put out a 2018 model of the RM1000x (no idea why). Currently it was only the 2015 model available until the 2021 model came out. I only have access to buying the 2015 RM1000x or the 2018 RM850x.

I can see pros and cons for both. If I did happen to get a 3090 this thread discusses how that GPU was shutting down a system with the RM850x but some unspecified 1000w model didn't: https://forum.corsair.com/forums/topic/165178-rm850x-shuts-down-from-3090-fe-power-spikes/

However to combat that someone with the exact CPU I plan to get has people saying the RM850x will be fine with even the 3090 FTW3 ULTRA from EVGA which I would assume spike higher than the FE edition:

Does the 1000w model being 2015 mean it's inferior in build quality/components to the updated 2018 850w? The price between them isn't that drastic (especially considering the rest of the build) so I just want to get what would be deemed the "community preferred" option.

PCIe 5 also includes 3.2kW transients in the spec so most current production PSUs regardless of wattage may not be able to sustain that. IIRC @jonnyGURU said that they were testing this out, not sure if RM1000x passed. So there's that.
