MB : Real difference between Z690 and B660?

Go to solution Solved by Helpful Tech Witch,

Overclocking.

the z has it, the b doesnt

plus theres more conectivity iirc on the z

I am planning my next build and I have two motherboards in mind :

ROG STRIX Z690-A GAMING WIFI D4

https://rog.asus.com/fr/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-z690-a-gaming-wifi-d4-model/
and

ROG STRIX B660-A GAMING WIFI D4

https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b660-a-gaming-wifi-d4-model/

I have already 2 sata SSD, 2 sata HDD, I plan to add/replace with 2 or 3 nvme SSD
I don't think I would feel having gen 4 nvme SSD since I'm already fine with my sata SSD so I don't mind having nvme gen 3.

Planned cpu I7 12700k paired with 4x8 DDR4

I tend to overclock cpu/ram down the line when I feel I need to stretch a bit more live out of the build, my first pc lasted 5 years, current one is starting its 4th year.

What are the real difference between both motherboards aside from the look?

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

yes, though both cpus work on both motherboards, but only a z series with a k varient can overclock (though a non k cpu may be able to be blck oced with a z series)

OC'ing and the Z board has more I/O for stuff like USB. So a Z board might have more, of faster USB ports.

The K series boards will be designed with overclocking in mind as well as having better connectivity. If you are going with a 12700K you’d be better off with a Z690 especially if you want to overclock.
