WD HDD color series explained

I will explain the WD HDD color series for you guy if don't know. I though it good idea that listing every WD series when listening to Laszlo music.

If you see anything confusing or wrong, please let me know!

 

1: Green

As the color say, it's eco-friendy, use less power, quiet. This is suitable for daily use, espically for school computer. 

But this have less life than normal.

2: Blue

This are specially designed for home usage, for backup drive, and low cost. Perfect for web-browsing computer.

But this one is REALLY LOUD.

3: Black

This one give ultimate performance, high cache memory. For enterprise, gaming or heavy video editing. Some server use this for special storage.

Quite expensive, but no cons because too perfect!

4: Red

As the name say, NASware. This one is specially designed for NAS that need to run constantly more than 7 days. Same with the green one, use less power, low-noise.

It can get paired with almost any NAS/Server.

5: Purple

I have no clue what this color mean, but my friends, are expert at security system, told me that Purple one is for security camera, can run 24/7 with the rest is only 25 minutes.

6: Gold

Specially designed for server (not NAS). Offer super high capacity with ULTRA large cache. (a 1TB one can have 128MB cache), offer highest HDD read/write speed and can get powered on for 3 weeks straight without problem.

Emm really expensive. WD official website sell 1TB - 128MB for $78.99, when a normal WD Blue is just $40-60. But it worth!

WD HDD also the brand that made HDD with highest MTBF time I would like to add. I don't sponsor, or hate other brand, just to tell my own thought and expirence with WD HDD.

So here's the suggesion if you want:

 

For school computer/low-performance computer: WD Green, WD Blue1

For daily-use computer (browsing, no heavy task): WD Green

For daily-use computer (medium task, office): WD Blue

For office computer: WD Blue, WD Black2

For gaming: WD Gold, WD Black3

For heavy, multitask: WD Black

For NAS: WD Red, WD Gold

For Server: WD Gold, WD Red4

 

1: Blue if for teacher/host computer.

2: Black if for host/important computer

3: Strongly recommend Black than Gold, but if have high budget, then you get it!

4: Red if server not usually active.

Most of this info, and more accurate info, is readily available a Google search away.

 

In particular your overview of Reds is wrong/outdated, there's now Red, Red Plus, and Red Pro after the controversy with WD putting inferior SMR disks in the ones previously just branded Red. 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Not to swoop in and gripe right away, but the WD website already does a pretty good job of this.

Almost none of this info is correct. Blue drives are not "really loud". And no cons for a Black drive? Yes, there are cons to those drives.

I had a WD Black in my very first gaming PC build over a decade ago when SSD's were still prohibitively expensive.

 

These days I don't know what the purpose of the the Black HDD's even is, since most gamers will want all their installed games on an SSD. 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. I only bought Black drives for a long time as I wanted a performance drive, that was reliable. Then I reached a point where they didn't make a black drive large enough, and now use Gold drives.  So my Steam library sits on a WD Gold drive.

WD used to make up utter nonsense about some of the features of their drives being better for surveillance, etc.  They were so ludicrous I thought at first they were lampooning drive specs, but they were serious. These claims would then get wreaked in actual reviews.

 

I switched to HGST for spinning rust years ago. Backblaze reliability reports agree with my own experience.

I have a few HGST drives around here. It's a little hard to get them through authorized retailers though.  WD has owned HGST for almost 10 years now though. So I'm not sure there is really a difference between the two at this point (the second being the Gold line). Even the labeling on the HGST drives changed quite a while back.
