HP SAS drivers not spinning up.

AshleyKitty123

Hey Everyone!

A while back i got a couple of SAS hdds off a friend who dismembered some old servers. As i do not have a SAS HBA to fully test these drives, i tried to see if they would spin up by powering them with a regular SATA power cable, but none of the 5 drivers powered up. I have also tried covering the 3.3V Pins with tape to no avail, but don't think that is the cause of this as these are SAS 6Gbps drives from 2009.

Do SAS drives need a HBA to power up or are these drives toast?

Drives in question:

3x  HP DG0146FARVU (HGS-HUC103014CSS60)

2x HP DG0146BALVN (ST9146803SS)

Have you had any success?   I'm having the same issue with 8 1TB HP SAs drives.  I have them in an R710 SFF with H200i crossflashed to IT mode.  Sata drives work just fine.  I can see the SAS drives in the Boot ROM, and with lsscsi, but cannot see with lsblk or fdisk.  The seem to want to spin about 3 times, and beep inbetween.  The activity light flashes continuously.
