Ryzen 9 system seems slow

SeitzO
Go to solution Solved by Chris Pratt,

It is slow, because you paired it with slow RAM. Ryzen in general is memory sensitive, and additionally, a chip like the 3950X with multiple CCDs *needs* faster RAM, as the infinity fabric that enables communication between the CCDs is tied to the RAM clockspeed. You should have at least 3600MHz for a chip like that.

Hi there!

haven't been here in a while.

now i feel like i have a bit of an issue.

my specs:

ryzen 9 3950x

rog strix x560-E Gaming

rtx 3070

2x32 ddr4 2666

1tb mp600 boot drive

and stuff.

I feel like it is not as snappy as i would expect it to be in video editing. or rendering as well in some tasks.

benchmarks all spit out reasonable numbers. but somehow when everything needs to talk to each other it seems slow to me. or is this machine just not that good anymore?

maybe the ram is the problem?

oh and i have a blackmagic quad hdmi in card in there. might that be the culprit?

thanks a lot and greeting from Germany!

Along with faster ram you should upgrade to quad channel ram.

The 3950X doesn't support quad channel.

You probably meant 4 sticks so it runs in dual-rank mode? Either way, a memory upgrade to 3600MHz cl16 memory should bring quite a bit more performance in memory sensitive tasks.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Dual rank isn't a mode, it's a physical attribute to memory configuration. Meaning there's memory IC's on both sides of the PCB. You can't turn it on and off like a feature in the bios or something.

Perhaps you meant "dual channel" which you only need 2 sticks to accomplish.

Running 4 single rank sticks essentially functions the same as running 2 dual rank modules. That's what i meant, i wasn't talking about channels.
