Okay so just to be clear before we begin, these two parts lists are meant to REPRESENT the cost of buying GTX 880 (Ti)'s and the new processors coming out (The 4960X is mean't to represent the cost of the up-coming 8 core i7). I won't actually be buying the specific mobo/cpu/gpu/memory in these parts lists. READ BELOW PLEASE!

Right, on to the explanation. If funds allow, I'll be building a new PC this summer used primarily for gaming, and will use dual GTX 880's (when they release) in SLI. That I am sure on. it will also be cooled by a custom water cooling loop as well. What I cannot decide on is whether to go for a "5930K" X99 Socket 2011-3 when it arrives, or for the upcoming "4790K" on the mainstream socket 1150 Z97 boards, considering I'll be running two cards in SLI.

I haven't forgotten about the 8 core i7 "5960X?" coming out this year, and considering how expensive this build will be anyway, I may have to pick one up. I'm planning an all-out balls-to-the-wall over-kill gaming system. So, what do you guys think? Is SLI GTX X80 cards and water-cooling Over-Kill enough? Or since I'm spending so much, should I throw in an Extreme edition 6 core or 8 core i7 too? This will be the last new build I do before going to University either next September (2015) or the year after (2016)

I plan on gaming @ 1440p with the RoG Swift 1440p monitor, or waiting for an IPS G-Sync monitor in either 1440p or 4K.

Thoughts? Mainstream socket, or enthusiast 2011-3 and a 6/8 core?

The mainstream "Z97" set-up should cost me around £2500. (assuming these estimations are accurate) including a custom loop worth about £500

The enthusiast "X99" set-up should run me around £3200 (assuming these estimations are accurate) including a custom loop worth about £500

It's WAY WAY WAY WAY too overkill for 1440P.

It's probably just what you need for 4K lol

Because it's my last new full build for the next (probably) 4 years (of course I'll upgrade certain components) but won't be upgrading anything for 2 years, I'll be almost certain to buy a 4K G-Sync monitor in that time if one becomes available.

1440p at 120 Hz I would hardly call it overkill for that.

Why not get like a $1500 PC and save the rest so you can upgrade?

You still see a smoother image on a 120Hz monitor if you didn't know. I had one and was running 80FPS maybe, but could see a smoother image all the time. You do not need 120 FPS to see 120Hz, it's entirely separate.

That I was aware of but once he's got a 60Hz + monitor it's not so overkill for 1440p especially not if he wants to be running at that full 120Hz

Because by the time it comes to upgrade, I'll have the money to do so. :)

Ooh, I got it :)

To really decide you'll need to look at specs when they are released along with pricing. Right now, I would say to just go with a high end i7 like the next gen 4770K.

He'll still see the difference...

Remember, this is an Over-kill build. With Dual GTX 880's I should be able to run every game at 120Hz...with Crysis 3 as an annoying exception.

So what do you think? If I get the money I'll be spending a lot anyway, so should I go for a 6 or 8 core on the new Socket 2011 or get the mainstream socket and a quad core?

I concede that yes but he'll see a more significant difference with dual 880's and he won't have to upgrade for quite as long, I should get back to work.

For gaming, even the next gen consumer i5 won't bottleneck dual 880s. It mostly comes down to epeen lol. Since you have such a huge budget, maybe you could tone down the CPU and get like dual 880tis if those come out or tri sli 880s.

If a GTX 880 Ti comes out, then I will get it. I want to do a "sensible over-kill" if that makes sense? So only 2 way SLI for me. I know it wouldn't but I have a large budget...and an i5 and two GTX 880 (Ti) in SLI doesn't make any logical sense ;)

I don't think they'll release another X80 Ti card. The only reason they released that card is because the R9 290X was slightly faster than the GTX 780 at stock so the one-upped AMD.

That's what I think too. Maybe get the next 5930K and dual 880s, but you could get better things like your motherboard and storage if you go with the consumer i7.

I understand your point, but the motherboard choice is specifically for aesthetics, I wouldn't use any of the (slightly gimmicky) features of RoG boards. The Sabertooth line fits with my theme and has a great warranty. As far as storage goes, yes it's tempting to go consumer for that reason...

It depends how much having a 6 core means to me...I'll have to think long and hard on that...

Yeah, it also depends on prices etc since the 6 core will make little to no impact on gaming.
